I LOVE the hybrid Escape. I actually look forward to driving it.
I bought my daughter an 05 Escape 4cyl XLT AWD when she turned 16 and was very impressed, so when I needed a daily driver, I bought the 06 hybrid Escape, Limited, AWD (sunroof, leather, heated seats, NAV....that actually works very well). Eligible for the $2K tax credit, also got $1000 rebate at the time.
A family member owns 2 Ford dealerships, so everyone in the extended family drives Fords. Asked the mechanics in the back how often they see Escapes in for service, they said not very often, just maintenance.
Yes, its mundane, it's boring, it's actually a Mazda Tribute platform, but that's what it's supposed to be, and it does it well.

GERMANY: Touareg, Cayenne to be VW’s first hybrids
31 January 2007| Source:
just-auto.com editorial team
With a new CEO, Volkswagen has changed its hybrid plans, and now the
first vehicle to use the automaker’s petrol-electric hybrid system will
be the Touareg, according to*Automobilwoche.
VW’s new CEO Martin Winterkorn changed the plans of its former boss
Bernd Pischetsrieder, who originally said the automaker’s first
gas-electric would be a hybrid version of the Jetta, which would arrive
by 2008, reports Trend.
Winterkorn states that the $2,000+ hybrid premium is too much for VW in
the competitive compact segment. VW believes that diesel*is a better
option for compact cars like the Golf/Rabbit and Jetta given the price
and fuel efficiency gains.
Under the new plan, the hybrid Touareg will be followed by a hybrid
version of the Porsche*Cayenne.

Huh, imagine that.
I'd be willing to bet that the hybrid electrical systems are nearly identical.
Hmmn, better get to my dealer first thing tomorrow morning and put a deposit so I'm #1 on the list.

You mean and trade in the Escape?? You'd be disowned by your family... unless you have a long lost uncle who owns a Porsche dealership, and I KNOW that isn't the case.
