You have CD based navigation - same as mine.

Model Year 2005 introduced the DVD (under your seat) navigation...

Well that sucks. i had an 04 VW Treg which also had Nav and it sucked big time. Are the 04 Cayennes good cars other than that? Friend of mine has one that sits in his garage with only 13k miles. will sell it to me for 41K. Very loaded, Basalt/black. good buy or not. do the 04's have problems?

I would buy it, you know he owner, its history, make sure all TSB's are complete (which I am sure have been done).

If he is a good bud then maybe he will let you drive it for a few days so you can make a well eduacated decision.

I really love my Cayenne and was lucky - ordered mine in October of 2003 and it arrived in March of 2004 - just squeaked by all the problems that the alpha models had so I consider mine an early bravo model.

Other than the "!" when towing my trailer that is equiped with LED lights - it tows very well, handels and drives well - but a few issues that I have had...

Rear window micro-switch (mine never acted up but they replaced it anyhootz)
Front right headlight assembly (replaced - turn signal failure)
Airbag fault (some TSB that they already knew about)
NEVER had the cowboy belt buckles for the rear seats installed
Radio amplifier failure
Had to replace the rotors with the brake pads at 20k
Eat's tires (but then again I drive it hard)
Still need to bring it in for the key fob update (mine work OK)

Although it may appear like alot - everything happened (other than the brakes) in the first year. My Cayenne has every option other than the Turbos of the Turbo Cayenne so there is lot's to break...

Again, very happy with it.

Does anyone know if the CD base nav system in the 04 Cayenne could be replaced with a later model DVD system?

Yes, I have done it in my 2004 Cayenne Turbo. A little costly but I do like the DVD system much better. If you decide to do it, let me know and I'll share my experience. There was one cable/harness that was next to impossible to find. I ended up using a harness designed for adding SAT Radio to the unit. Let me know if you have any questions.

So you actually DID that? It would be worth sharing this info if you could. Seems like that would be one hell of a job, to say the least.

A506 recall. IIRC, the only mandatory government recall in P!g history. I'm pretty sure Larry came up with the name Cowboy Belt Buckle.

Do a search of the forums, I'm pretty sure there are pictures of them installed in some P!gs.
Larry removed his and sent them to Peter the Great at PCNA years ago, along with a letter, the contents of which were never disclosed, but I can only imagine.

Yes Nyet is the official PCNA position, however as pointed out in this thread, you can successfully retrofit DVD nav in place of CDROM nav ... I don't know why, but you can.
