IS the Cayenne an SUV?
https://rennlist.com/forums/928-forum/294125-cayenne-following-the-path-of-the-928-a.html
Seems the topic made a good stir on the 928 board,,, after all of the ''this and that'' i had to ask, is it time to find a new classification for this type of vehicle .
Seems too many think SUV is TRUCK based like most are but performance if any is usualy limited to straight line only and leave out all other performance areas.
So i have to ask Is thier room for a new designation for a Vehicle that acts like a sports car but can offroad with the best stockers and tow a serious load.
here are some thoughts
GTUV Grand Torismo Utiliy Vehicle
GUTV Grand Utility Torismo Vehicle
GUT Grand utilitarian Torismo
Just what ever you do DO NOT CALL IT A SPORTS CAR.......lol
Iv driven the turbo and think its very much a sports ''car'' not that a name realy maters .
Sincerly yours wishing for a Turbo S
Tom.

Yes seems most dont even know about the Turbo S.......500hp in a GUT anyone?
ok so 2 for truck, this is starting out like the red soxs playng the yanks!
you guys realize the only thing "truck" like is its towing ability? Nothing else in its structure is truck like. Well mabe its ability to take an offroad beating.
Dont get me wrong..i love trucks/SUV's My 75'Scout was amazing offroad, and my 76'Trailduster4x4
was pretty good for its size (35''mud tires, trailduster is plymouth=Dodge ramcharger).
i drove the two above for 10yrs , my best comparison would be two are great weightlifters and one is a champion Mix martial artest/tri athalon.
2-0 for ''TRUCK''

I vote for SUV... as the ultimate SUV (in the sense of doing many things well). It is actually quite amazing that it serves well as a sports sedan, a utility vehicle (load carrying and towing capacity), a family hauler, and an off-road machine.
I don't consider it a truck. When I think of a truck, I think of a pickup truck, a panel van (for business use), or a Hummer.

well... I'm thinking more like AWD wagon.
I use my Cayenne to transport product sometimes and it holds about as many boxes as the trunk on a Camry... not good.
I went and looked at a new Tahoe the other night for work-only and even the Tahoe (not Suburban) has like 2x the rear space as Cayenne. And the new Tahoe is pretty modern but I wouldn't get rid of the Cayenne maybe just get a Tahoe for work. Funny thing is that when I first sat down in the Tahoe it felt like I was sitting too tall so I lowered the seat all the way down... Cayenne style.

The words Tahoe and style in the same breath seems a bit of a stretch. The Cayenne is a SPORTS utility vehicle not an SAV or a bus (Suburban) you cannot readily compare them unless you are being subjective, they simply don't fit in the same category as each other..
The referenced thread is the same drivel that has been written by sport car owners even before the Cayenne was launched. Nothing changes they just want it to go away.
Fact is, the reason we got newer sport cars is the revenue generated by the Cayenne, the sport cars were certainly not generating that kind of R & D money.
It's not an off road racer, thats why specialist cars are developed, its a road racer with other capaiities. Its got 80% of real off road capabilities but I am sure it was not designed for anything other than fun in those cases where off road is required.
Anyone who doubts it take it to the beach and have a blast.
SUV = Truck not car, I like racing cars in my truck haha

If it walks like a duck, acts like a duck and looks like a duck....it's a duck.
The Cayenne is Stück Scheiße.
Apart from that, Larry and I have no strong opinions one way or the other.

Havin grown up with A old school SUV and musclecars as a summer car (Scout II and Cuda then 68'charger R/T ) thier were definate seperations from what a sportscar was and that of a truck derived SUV, not that im calling the cuda or charger a sportscar, but i degress.
For 40 to mabe 50yrs SUV's were basic truck frames and running gear but rebodied to carry more people and dogs = ) and protect them from the elements.
As for sports cars i always concidered them to be purpose built for speed and handling, Then one day i got the chance to drive the Cayenne Turbo and MAN was i hooked.... didnt drive handle or preform on the road like any truck or SUV, But just like a purpose built ''sports car'' my drive included short blast on the highway and a nice bout done an old town back road, (there it out preformed a normal sports car, because it was a bad road and had alot of blind turns that sitting high realy helps the nerves). Then wanting more on the Cayenne , i found out that it can ''realy'' offroad
and thier are guys that rock climb and trail ride thiers all the time, and basicly stock.
which brings me to my original question, Is the cayenne a far enough departure from what is labled a "TRUCK" or "SUV" to have its own designation?
I think so.

Tommy,
Your references to "truck derived" and "car derived" are a bit out dated. I thnk your definition of "truck" is basicaly body on frame construction. The thing is, modern technology has rendered that thinking obsolite. Who would have thought you could build a unibody vehicle with the ability to haul 7700 lbs? Up until the Cayenne / Touareg, nobody.
Why it matters what it's called or what it's lineage is really escapes me but since you asked the initial question here's an official definition of the word "truck"
The Cayenne is a truck, sorry Tommy and ltc

truck
1. Any of various heavy motor vehicles designed for carrying or pulling loads.
2. A hand truck.
3. A wheeled platform, sometimes equipped with a motor, for conveying loads in a warehouse or freight yard.
4. One of the swiveling frames of wheels under each end of a railroad car or trolley car.
5. A set of bookshelves mounted on four wheels or casters, used in libraries.
6. Nautical. A small piece of wood placed at the top of a mast or flagpole, usually having holes through which halyards can be passed.
7. Chiefly British. A railroad freight car without a top.

I'm afraid we're going to have to agree to disagree......
A real truck can not be built on a unibody.
A real truck is built on a frame of cold rolled, God Bless America, steel.....lots of it.
A real truck has a solid front and rear axle (leaf springs get you extra credit)
A real truck could drag a Cayenne (actually 2 or 3) kicking and screaming to the car crusher.
The Cayenne is a lot of things, but it's not a truck.
