completely OT tips?
Having disagreement with wife about tipping valet...
Do you give BOTH guys the $$, the one who TAKES your car AND the one who BRINGS your car?? If the place charges a valet charge I always thought you only tip the guy who BRINGS you your car back from the lot??

I only tip the guy who brings it back.
It probably doesn't matter because either (a) most valet operations pool their tips and divvy it up at the end of the day or
(b) at the end of the day everyone gets an equal chance at taking and returning cars and getting tips on both times thus it averages out for everyone.

I tip the guy taking the car if I want it to be up front and I tell them that as I'm giving them the tip. If they say that can't be done then the tip never leaves my hand. Otherwise the guy who returns the car gets the tip. I usually only tip once, it's assumed with the first tip that the car will be left up front and no one will have to retrieve it.

Always get the special service from the first guy - less incentive to go through your change.

I say neither...... I absolutely abhor valets. I will park a block or two away and walk to avoid dealing with them.
Why? In Dallas we have many Complimentary Valets at shopping malls, etc. They are allowed to block off entire sections of the lot leaving the self-parkers nowhere to park. Additionally, when you give them your keys, you execute a contract that says (paraphrased): I don't hold the valet company responsible for damage or loss to my car. So, why hand your keys to a 19 year-old pothead who will attempt to do a block-long burnout?
