switch the ac off 2 minutes before you arrive at destination. this will give it time to dry, which in return will not produce any smell since there is no humidity left to foul.

Thankyou 356driver. I took the filter out (two 5.5MM hexs on the filter) and checked it. There was dust that fell out when removed, but no smell. I vacuumed it clean and put it back in. It is directional so one should remember which way the arrows point on the filter. Was wondering (judging by the stuff that fell out) if this was the first filter for the HVAC or whether there was another one upstream?

Had this problem in my Boxster whenI used to leave the auto climate control on AC in the summers. When I switched to turning the AC on and off manually the smell went away and never came back. As you pointed out, the key is to turn off the AC a few minutes before you shut off the car while leaving the fan blower on to dry out the duct work.

Hmmm, makes sense, but surely the point of Auto is you can just leave it in that mode! Bad design somewhere .............
