Hey guys, I read a couple of previous posts on the best winter tires but maybe I can get some recent views now that it's snowed a couple of times in some places. I'm undecided between the Pirelli Scorpion Ice&Snow or the Dunlop Grandtrek (a bit more expensive). I live in Montreal, so we get freezing rain/snow and we get some pretty bad storms. I was using the stock continentals and my ABS are going off at stop signs and I'm sliding around worse than corollas on the roads. I'm used to driving an audi, and even with my bald summer tires I could handle the first couple of weeks of the winter with the quattro. Anyways, opinions please!!

 

Scorpion I & S are very good on 18's.

I've got the OEM 18" wheels with Dunlop GranTrek M2 (OEM N spec), bought from the dealer for $2000.

No, they're not on yet. I just got home from towing the trailer + 968 (6000#) to a detailer in 3" of snow on the 20" summer tires. Made any day at the track seem easy, definitely a handful to drive. Don't try this at home kids.........

 

I knew you were crazy.. but summer tires in 3" of snow with a trailer and !!!!!!!!!!!! lights to irritate the "villa" man in the st. jacket and a pencil hanging from his lips? YOU ARE CERTIFIABLE.. and to think we old farts were harassing those poor "innocent" little boys driving 150-170 MPH on interstates in "light" traffic...

I proposed TWO st. jackets for ltc.. and the pencil needs to go in the other orifice to keep him from sitting in his Cayenne's driver's seat and attempting a winter wonderland adventure again!? Do I have a second??

 

Crazy? No.
Attempting to end the life of both myself and the Cayenne......Cayenne first hopefully? Yes.
(it didn't work, I made it home successfully.....with the Cayenne)

BTW, PSM doesn't do **** with a trailer attached under these conditions.

So now you're arguing with your part-time therapist.. CRAZY - YES! Deathwish? Well I'd agree with that! Alas, the good Old Cayenne didn't let you down.. and I'd wager that your driving skills precluded the PSM sensing you needed help..

When I grow up.. I want to be just like you... well, sort of.... well okay not really at all.. but it sounded good. I really like my Cayenne.. it isn't love... it isn't hate.. it is a unique vehicle that turns heads, has raw power, irritates the schitzu out of me and yet taunts me enough to be called a "tease" so that I still can't put "das beast" out of its misery.. Where's the pencil and jacket.. I'm starting to think like you?!

 

I have 18 Grandteks on aftermarket wheels from Tirerack- have similiar M3's on a Mini and M2's on a A4- very happy with them. Work better than Blizzacks on my son's S4...good in the snow and decent on dry and wet pavement. I recommend the Dunlops.

 

Can't go wrong with either one -- Pirelli or Dunlop's. I have the Pirelli Ice and Snows 255 55 18 H XL, and they are excellent.. Priced reasonably, as well. I believe there is now a 'V' rated version.

 

Just slapped my 18's on with some Conti M&S tires (should be fine for Maryland/DC Area) will let you know how well in a few hours...

Last year kept the 19's on with some summer tires and took it out in 1" of snow, WoW, talk about squirely!

 

I prefer the Pirelli ice and snow, now offered with V speed rating.

 

I have the Dunlops and they have exceeded my expectations. Not a lot of snow here but we had a teriffic blizzard when I first put them on three years ago. Not many people on the roads at the time and I was able to have excellent control of the vehicle. I read only good reports about the Pirelli's

 

I have continental 275/40 - 20.
Not tested on a snow yet.

All I can tell you - this conti's are bad on wet road !
