Default How accurate is the digital/analog speedometer?

Just the other day I was on my way to work West of Chicago on I-88. As an aside...newly paved, two lane highway, just after sunrise, clear day, and no one else on the road. I like taking advantage of my truck's permormance capabilities, so I frequently push the top speed when the conditions are suitable. According to the speedometer I was able to get my Cayenne up to 171mph without the side mirrors retracted. When I pulled them in I was able to push it up to 173mph. It was my understanding though, that the Cayenne's top speed was rated at 165mph. There was no wind to speak of either against me or at my back to "help" me top out. This road is dead flat so I wasn't able to take advantage of a downhill run either.

So I am assuming that the speedometer is slightly off in its calibration...or...I was actually up to 173mph

BTW, even at this speed there was relatively minimal wind noise and no wheel vibration to speak of, so I am pleased with this as well.

You got 'em up in the spread, let's see if they jump on the bait.

Never had mine close to that speed; never wanted to. Glad you are driving in Chicago. But I did check the speedometer (digital) against a GPS at around 70MPH, and it was dead on. BTW, BMW's in the US market deliberately overstate their speed by about 5MPH. I was told that by BMW HQ when I discovered my previous X5 was off. According to HQ, they were doing their customers a favor to reduce instances of speeding tickets. I was so pissed.

Turbo 165.. Cayenne 150.. Cayenne 133.. So which model were you driving in your "story".. I love the nice touch of mirrors retracted, too... man, you need an agent and a publisher -- good fiction.. I think there must have been a lot of wind.. cuz the schitzu sure is "blowing in". So, if you're on a rural two lane, newly paved road --- are you sure it wasn't your tractor going that fast? And are you married to your sister? .

Kooser-

The wisest thing to do is to wait until the road has more people on it. Then you can gauge your speed better. Maybe 04BlackTanTurbo can go side by side with you? See if you can both get up above 170 mph, roll down your windows and discuss it.

I have the turbo. It was an interstate highway, hence the "I", and I am just lettting you know what the speedometer said as I too am doubting my actual speed. I was looking straight on - so no parallax, just in case another sarcastic reply comes my way. By the way, I don't own a tractor , I have all of my teeth and as far as I know my wife has no genetic relation to me .

Hey Shamus peep 'dis
I'm gonna flip it. Are you a hata? You MUST have a PHD - Playa Hata Degree.
Pleeease with that "poser" sheeit of yours all perpetratin like you was a wigga biatch outa Andover! I'm not tryin' to sell no woof tickets and I wasn't skied neitha at the time - just layin' out da facts.

Now this is what I expected, a plausable explanation from Mudman2:
"Someone ran a speed test on the TT using a GPS system and is showed about 3% high at 100 and 8% high at full bore."

Thanks

IIRC, there are federal laws regarding speedometer/odometer accuracies. If I can find it at work, I'll post the results.
Of course, once you alter wheels/tires, it's all out the window.
