Tiptronic Driving
Boy it's addicting. For the first year or so of driving, I never messed with it as I was used to the M3 shifting which is opposite of Porsche...i.e. Pushing up is down shifting as opposed to upshifting. When I wanted a more 'spirited' drive, I'd just shift PSM off. However, I've been doing the Tiptronic thing more as of late and what a hoot. Really cool and pretty smooth.
You don't think driving exclusively in Tiptronic or constantly shifting off PSM is in anyway increasing the wear on the car/engine, do you?
-Matt
p.s. The steering wheel shifters are useless.

Depends on what max rpm you change gears on. I use it a lot as well on my CS especially on twisty roads, havent tried on my CTT yet. The only advantage the cayenne have over the 911 it has them both on the steering wheel and the shift lever, which is cool I use the steering wheel tip on straight aways.

Alex,
Actually the first tiptronic S happened on the 993, with both steering wheel buttons and shift lever for shifting. I used the steering wheel buttons to shift more than 99% of time when I drove my 993 Targa. I find that the shift buttons on the Cayenne relatively harder to reach (not close enough to the thumbs).

For those who can call themselves "Cayenne towing survivors", manual mode is almost a pre-requisite, as 6th really doesn't do much....unless you're on the Bonneville Salt flats....yes, it has to be REAL flat, with a good tail wind if you want to tow in 6th......gearing is little substitute for a big block turbodiesel.....hmmn, note to self: remember to take the wife's Excursion next time I tow.....

I will down shift to keep in the power range, but not to slow down...
Towing, then I'm in manual unless cruising down to Florida where it is sooo flat 6th can be used for miles on end until there is a rise in the road, then back to 5th.

Can you explain the process?
Also, was this explained in the User's Manual and I missed it?
Thanks.

the tip with a 6 speed IS very addictive................... the old 4 speeds blow compared. wish there was a 6speed box for the 993's. imho.
think you may be talinkin' about throttle-BLIPing? to help w/ shifts.... yes?

Yep. Just try it. The deeper the blip the wider the downshift. You will screw up and drop it from 6th to 3rd, so I'd suggest trying it in lower gears to start with. When you can control the downshift it is sort of cool. Less work for those forefingers, too.
