Default The king of vain

Some people hate them and some love them, but when California (the vanity plate mecca of the US) opened up the doors to personalization, the one plate chosen by the most folks in the state was "PORSCHE". This little-known-fact alone makes the issue of vanity plates one that must be deliberated, or at least considered, on Rennlist. Hell, they are American folk art; a 7 or 8 character tin canvas of creativity.

I have finally settled on the choice for my Cayenne S after considering many options. Unfortunately, all of my favorites were chosen and the basic roman numeral concept for 911 (IX XI) was also taken when I attempted to get vanity plates for the new 911 S cab. For those considering vanity plates in their state, here are some options I thought of for the Cayenne (I was limited to 7 characters, and a seemingly endless supply of spaces between characters). Later in the thread, perhaps I'll reveal my choice, but I would enjoy hearing your feedback (for better or worse) and what some of the other ideas are that are floating around out there. Here is the list:

DR PEPR
IMA PEPR
HOT PEPR
RED PEPR
PEPPER
PFEFFER (Pepper in German)
WNTR 911
GOS N SNO
SPICY
2 SPICY
V8 JUICE
THE PEPR
MY PEPR
I XLR8
PDQ PEPR
PEPR PWR

What are your favorites?

FYI--here are some pretty good sites for further ideas to create your own special messages...

Forget the Pepper monikers.. go with STATMAN? or maybe PEPRCHZ or CHZPEPR since you're from WI.

How about just your initials. I was going to put ' TUR80 2' on my cayenne, but then decided it would look too tacky so I just put my initials instead.

Interesting story about the coveted California "PORSCHE" vanity plate. It currently resides on a 356 Carrera owned and raced by Cheryl Dunkel. The plate was originally registered by the owner of a beat up Toyota. The Dunkel family are avid classic Porsche collectors and remained in contact with the Toyota owner until he was ready to sell the car. They paid several thousand dollars for the run out Toyota, threw away the car, and kept the plate. Here is a picture of Cheryl's Carrera:

Great story 356driver. There are several web sites out there that offer users the chance to list their plates and sell them to the highest bidder. I have seen one story of a plate in Japan that sold for over $1 million. It could be more lucrative than selling web site domain names.

When they first went with vanity plates in Iowa they only allowed 6 letters so I was the first to ask for Portia. Still have it on my 914 after 30 years- some old lady called me once a year or so after I'd gotten it to ask if she could have it because that was the name of her cat. Felt bad, but told her sorry. Was lucky to get Carrera for one of my 911's- am keeping that plate as well though now it's on the Cayenne which probably pisses off some 911 drivers when they see it. But you must remember, there aren't that many Porsches out here compared to California, etc .

are vanity plates expensive in the states?? I recently enquired about the plate 'TUR80 S' for my 993 tubo 'S' and was quoted £65,000.

(In the UK,licence plates have to have numbers as well)

Mudman, the vanity plates must be a recent addition, because I saw your video clip with the Fabspeed cat bypass pipes and noticed only the standard issue plates. Okay, enough of the Sherlock Holmes-ing...I would guess that your PA plate might read PEP PA, or perhaps MUDMAN.

Yep...they are pretty darn cheap here...usually anywhere from $10-35 depending on the state you live in. That's just the plate, however...you still must pay for registration and taxes, if applicable. This is just another way for us Yanks to express our individuality. I am amazed every time I pick up a European magazine like BMWCar and see the ads in the classified section for "vanity" plates running in the THOUSANDS...Yikes
