Torags,
If you see the concept car at Frankfurt, then it is likely that Dr. W has decided....

Just to clear a few things up...

I could care less about which emblem is on the front, unless fuel type and price are the same, in which case I would go with the Porsche. I don't mind the price of the diesel and would not get a used S just because I could save a few bucks.

What I really want is the diesel, unless it is not as impressive as I expect it to be, which does not seem to be a problem from the few here that have actually driven one.

As far as fuel issues and maint costs, I doubt very seriously the long term cost will be higher on the diesel. I have had many diesel motors, in cars, P/U, class 8 trucks, Motorcoach and boats, there is no way a gasoline motor would have performed as well for less money in terms of fuel and maint. costs. I have spent up to $40k/mo. buying diesel fuel, so I know where to get good fuel and in the areas I will travel the most, diesel usually averages less per gal. than premium gas.

I appreciate all of you leaving your feedback!

lewis-26 gallons at 15 mpg would give you range of 390 miles-why the fuel stops at 220 miles?

I get ~12-13mpg towing my open trailer, so I assume Lewis is getting ~9-10mpg towing his enclosed ATC.

You owe it to yourself to drive a modern diesel TDI. They are very different than your '80s diesels (trust me, I grew up with Rabbit diesel, Dasher diesel, and Vanagon diesel (you want to talk slow? try 48 hp in a 4000 lbs+ van).

I totally disagree with this. The scale probably slides with both the gas and diesel engine. Clearly if you use more power you will use more fuel - in either application.

That said, most of us don't drive around using full power all the time. The TDI Touareg gets 24 mpg highway. That's up to 10 mpg better than what I hear most Cayenne S owners get.

I'm telling you, it is an amazing truck. They just cost too much.

Colin, I'm jealous. I'm only getting 10mpg towing my aluminum trailer (and that's with the V6). Total load is under 4,000 lbs. Of course the Cayenne is so stable I too often look down and am going 75-80mph. I bet if I slowed it down a bit (and probably should) I might see a bit better mileage.

I normally get 10mpg or so towing the Cup car and I get about 13mpg or so towing the trailer empty (well, just my son's kart in the back....pretty empty).

The fuel stop at 220 miles is normally when the "Please Refuel Now" warning comes on the dash, so it's time to find a station and fill up again. Sorry, I should have been more clear.

(Of course, thanks to the Cayenne's factory tow control unit (actually made by Westfalia IIRC) not working worth a S#*T with LED lighting, I drive with the "!" lit the whole time due to "Check Trailer Lights", so sometimes I miss the "!" for "Please Refuel Now"....but that's a story for another day)

My tow load was only about 3000lbs. Trailer is about 800lbs and my old 914 was right around 2000lbs. I have not yet caclulated what my fuel consumption was when I towed the 964Turbo down to Road Atlanta (that was ~4000lbs total).

Colin,

Do you run Road Atlanta often? I'm trying to run with the Peachstate PCA there sometime soon. That's a tough ticket to get.....I've applied twice the day the applications opened and didn't get in. I'd really like to run that track though (never have).

Sorry to hear you are having some "bugs" with your Cayenne. Mine develops a new problem every other day. It's no longer as much frustrating as it is entertaining. To quote Forrest Gump, driving the Cayenne is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you are going to get.

Mike - I've only been to Road Atlanta twice. Both times were with Peachstate in late January. Both times it was cold, but was still fun. Road Atlanta is simply an awesome track. It's probably my 2nd favorite track (#1 Mosport, #2 Road Atlanta, #3 VIR, #4 Mid Ohio or Watkins Glen).

The January event may be my best chance to get on Road Atlanta. I bet its not in as high demand as some of the other dates. Where is Mosport? Sounds like Road Atlanta is great if you like it better than VIR. VIR is my favorite without a close second. #1 VIR, #2 VIR, #3 Putnam Park, #4 Mid Ohio, #5 Gingerman. I'm running Barber this fall and I hear its fantastic as well.

Getting back to the diesel thread. Does anyone have information from a credable source that you can use diesel 2 in the V10?

I have not seen anything in writing saying you needed to use #1

I saw it in a Euro Magazine last year. I would do a lot of research before commiting.
