Default Home video of 2004 Cayenne Turbo shift points 0-93mph

Not sure if anyone has attempted this before or if anyone really cares, but I pointed my video camera at the instrument cluster and "slammed the hammer down" The results were actually pretty cool!! I then used "Ulead Video 8" to ananlyze the results frame by frame

Course Conditions:
pin straight dead-end forest road no people, dogs, humans, cars around
Dead stop.....foot on the TOP of the pedal
PSM was ON
Latest DME fix implemented by dealer
Car was in Drive - No tiptronic used
windows UP
wife holding the "ohh ****" handles ) (you can hear her tell me to slow down at around 80mph)
Launch technique: quick jab of the foot directly to the top of the pedal

-At 0.00 secs the recording begins. I am in 2nd gear at a standstill foot on brake. Getting ready to start
-At 2.28 secs you see the tranny drop from 2 to 1 (My foot hit the gas causing the downshift)
-At 3.00 secs the rpms begin to rapidly rise in 1st gear
-At 6.03 secs shifts into 2nd gear at 6500 rpms & 26mph ***
-At 8.22 secs shifts into 3rd gear at 6500 rpms & 52mph - rpms drop to 4800
-At 14.11 secs shifts into 4th gear at 6500 rpms & 86mph - rpms drop to 4800
-At 14.29 secs hits 91mph at 6400 rpms (it was about the shift into 4th, but I let off the gas) we then hit 93 and I stopped the camera and hit the brakes..my goal was 0-100 but I ran out of road....maybe next time.

*** Interesting note on this one. The panel showed it switching into 2nd at 5000 rpms & 20mph, but the rpms did not drop until 6500 rpms (which would be a normal condition for a shift ) this means the display logic for this gear could be wrong...who knows!!

Comments? Questions? Ideas?

Make sure you turn up the volume!

There are those who think that concentrating on driving, especially during a WOT take-off, should demand one's complete attention.

Couldn't your wife have held the camera while you focused on the task at hand?

Wouldn't a PSM OFF takeoff resulted in a more spirited sprint?

I wanted to report all conditions. Afterwards I was wondering if this would have an effect or not ......how differently would the Cayenne react with this turned off? Dry road conditions.

I like the wife/girlfriend's comments in the background.

"ok!" @ 81 mph
"you're going too fast!" @ 93 mph

Do it again without her in the car and let’s see it shift through all six gears

LOL Yup thats my wife I didn't tell her about this "experiment" until we got to the particular road and the camera was rolling. She likes to drive the Boxster and thinks the Turbo is "a little too much for me"

If you lived in NJ I would say meet up with me and you can hold the camera the fact that we were doing 80+ in 3rd means 5th gear would have the truck at the max speed limiter....Bring some bail money!!

I am thinking it might be time to move this experiment to a track...any suggestions in the tri-state area?

The camera was probably rolling a few seconds before he started to accelerate.

Your right, I was wondering if this was going to be confusing for some. I edited the text above to start at 0.00 seconds so think of it this way. For the 0-60 The Cayenne comes off the line at at 3.00 sec

-At 3.00 secs the rpms begin to rapidly rise in 1st gear
-At 8.22 secs shifts into 3rd gear at 6500 rpms & 52mph - rpms drop to 4800

So this would mean I went from 0 - 52mph in 5.22 seconds which is right on target for the Turbo.

But..most sources (including Porsche) list the 0-62 mph time as around 5.2 not the 0-52 mph timee. Part of the discrepancy is likely that in your run you did not use any 'launch control' i.e. rev up to spool the turbos while holding the brake down pre-launch - cars mags and the like always do this with automatics or dump the clutch in a manual - depending on the car model they might/might not disable traction control...whichever gives better numbers!
I did enjoy watching it though...could tell you were grinning.

Yes I was grinning the whole time..LOL
Wingless was saying to try PSM OFF and like you said spooling the Turbos with the break down should do the trick! I need some practice now

The rennlist site only lets you upload pictures. All video has been hosted on either private or public sites and linked from this site. What I did was setup a free website on tripod and uploaded my 3meg video. Hope that helps!

FYI - Last night I tried this again with PSM OFF and one thing I noticed is that it always drops down to 1st gear at complete stops....I may be able to shave some more time off if this is the case. Might be time to get the vid camera out again!

Default Try to upload now Gaurang

Hi Gaurang -
I would love to find as many vids as possible to become the keeper of the bytes!
I just changed the access so I think you can upload to my site. Is your clip the same as the Fabspeed clips that are already on there?
Thanks, dave
