Default Turbo doubt

Hey guys,

I have a cayenne turbo on order, due here in late April. Im starting to have second thoughts about it. I'm reading lots of complaints on this board and others about tremendous turbo lag, along with excessive tire wear and oil consumption. I can deal with tire wear and adding oil, but the turbo lag would drive me insane, I'm afraid. I was able to test drive a cayenne turbo a few months ago, and didn't really notice alot of turbo lag, but didn't really get to run it very hard. I passed on an opprotunity to buy a BMW X5 4.8is, but now Im wondering if I should have gotten the bimmer. Any thoughts??

The Turbo lag on the Cayenne is no more pronounced than that on the TT or GT2. There may be many reasons ($$$) not to buy a Cayenne Turbo, but "turbo lag" is not one of them.

I think it's a great vehicle and doesn't disappoint, even after the "newness" wears off.

I agree with Colm - I have had no issues with Turbo lag.

I do use oil on a regular basis (every 2-3k miles ) and I'm on my third set of tyres (16k miles). The costs are high but then - the performance is exceptional!

I continue to find myself impressed every day and have found nothing to match it's breadth of ability.
Personally I couldn't reccomend it highly enough - but that's just me.

As a foot note I'm starting to think that the X5 is looking a bit dated.

As per above, turbo lag is not a reason not to get the TT. Looking over your stable I think the Cayenne is a nice addition.

I regret everyday trading in my Cayenne TT...If financially is not a burden, it will blow the Bimmer away...

devon-are you saying that you went thru 3 sets of tires in 16k miles, or 1 set every 16k miles?

Mine has required three quarts of oil in 19K miles.

Tires will depend upon the amount of cornering "fun" the vehicle and tires enjoy. Something, the tires, experience the burden of holding a 6,000 pound vehicle on the chosen line.

TestnDoc,
I don't think I could deal with tire wear and adding oil like ben in lj for a $100K SUV. You are a bigger/better man than I, Sir.

There is still no alternative except a bimmer due for complete replacement.

You cannot use the board to create your opinion, remember only perhaps 1% of owners are on the boards.

Actually, the new RR Sport (as well as the 06 RR) may be an alternative. These are both due in June, they may not be better but they will be cheaper.

I don't think there is a turbo lag issue with these cars.

Ours has been awesome , some oil usage but "as said 100 times" it eventually goes away and was not serious as some others 1qt every 1000 miles.

Our car has been a hoot, we love it to death and would buy another if it gives us the same experience.

We bought the car because we loved it compared to all the other SUV's, none matched it so there was only one to get

Good luck with whatever you choose, there is always one that will fit your needs or personality.

Love my Cayenne S and if I had the extra 20K to spend (vice saving to put towards a 997) then I would have gotten a Turbo instead!

I am on my third set now. The first set were changed at 6000 miles.

Porsche uk seem to have accepted there was a problem with the alignment, although nothing was ever put in writing.

The second set lasted for another 9000 miles. So I'm on the third set now.

To be honest It's the sort of wear that I would expect from my bike - not my car.

Having said that the CT is a big heavy car with fantastic performance and grip. I used a have a C4S and found that I went through tyres at about 12000 miles. I figure that with a similar performance and nearly twice the weight for the CT - the tyre wear I'm achieving is probably realistic.

Also, I mainly drive on twisty backroads with very few long straight sections. Consequently the tyres edges take a pounding. On smoother faster roads I think the wear could be quite different (obviously a smoother driver would make a difference too).

Regards

We got 6k out of our first set though Porsche NA said it was "normal" and did nothing about it. The wear was even which ruled out alignment, suspension, or pressure issues. Ours were not worn on the sides because it was very conservatively driven by a pregnant woman rather than aggressively though twisties. If I were the one driving the car and she got 6k, I'd be lucky to get 2k!
