Default Trailer towing. Are loud, banging sounds typical?

I tow a 20 foot Boston Whaler with my Cayenne S. It's a 5000 lbs load when gassed up (including trailer), with a tongue weight estimated around 100 lbs. This is the same trailer/boat combo I've been towing with other vehicles for years, yet for some reason there seems to be a lot of banging when I use the Cayenne. The hitch is factory installed but the receiver was the one I've been using for years and I know there is a little play in the receiver socket so I'm thinking of putting tape around it to lessen some of the play and to see if this is the source of the noise.

Anybody else notice that it's awefully load when towing? First time I towed with the Cayenne I pulled over to see if the hitch came loose.

Wouldn't you want about 500 lbs of tongue weight, 10% of the total weight? It is possible that the banging is the ball carrier flopping up and down within the receiver. It may help to shift the trailer axle backwards, or the boat forwards, to increase the tongue weight.

When I tow my open trailer w/car (about 3,000 lbs total) I get the loud bangs from the hitch/receiver as wingless describes. My tongue weight is correct, but when I hit a bump, it makes the noise.

I get that with my old ball which is further out than the Porsche one, but with the Porsche one its a much tighter fit no bangs

You are using a 2" ball with a 2" receiver ... Right?

Torags, right, 2" ball & receiver. I have 2 Cayenne S's and they both do it although the one with air suspension seems to bang around a little less. Wingless, interesting point about the tongue
weight. Perhaps it's a little more but I know I can lift it if I have too. Thing is I've towed this trailer/boat combo with a Jeep Cherokee, GMC 1500 4WD pickup, and a GMC Yukon with the same ball and receiver and never had this much noise.

A jack will allow raising it from the ball, with a greater tongue weight.

Just picked up the Cup car from the race shop, used the Cayenne just for grins.

On the way over, you could hear the hitch banging around with an empty (2400# enclosed trailer)
On the way home, you could hear it, but it was less frequent (probaby due to tongue weight) at 5100# car+ trailer.
After parking the trailer at home and driving around with just the hitch/bar/ball, you could hear it more frequently, as it bounced around in the receiver.

I don't hear anything when towing with my wife's Excursion, but then again, the hitch is about a zip code away based on the size of the vehicle.

BTW, I'm not using the Porsche supplied towing adapter, as it is a 2" ball and I used a 2 5/16".
