Default CTT Alternator source

I’m considering replacing the 186,000 mile alternator on my ‘04CTT as preventative maintenance. It’s working fine, but I’m looking for peace of mind. Trouble is they’re $1400 for a replacement. Has anyone found a high quality (OEM) replacement alternator that is less expensive? I don’t want to do a preventive maintenance action that results in installing a low-quality unit. Any tips? Many thanks…

For what a new one costs, I might consider finding a lower mileage used part. It looks like used alternators are available for under $300. It doesn't sound like they are a very high failure item, so going used might be worth the gamble. You could have it bench tested too.
