Default 12V socket under glovebox

Hey guys,

First post so sorry if this has been asked before but I haven't been able to find it.

So unplugging my dashcam every time I turn the car off is getting annoying. I had a look under and my car only has the one 12V socket so I bought a used one and thought I'd wire this one in so that its ignition live. Once I received it I noticed there are 3 pins, I was expecting 2, a ground and a live. Does anyone know the wiring schematics and what the 3 wires are for?

The below is a screenshot from a video that shows you the wires:

Backlight? That would be my guess, though don't know for sure.

Yeah thats what I thought at first, but its under the glovebox and as far as I'm aware (although I don't know for certain) it doesn't light up. I'll check later and update the thread

The thin blue/gray wire is indeed for the light.

My sockets under the glove box are allways live. I've my dash cam wired off my rear view mirror.

Yeah I have one under the dash and its always live. I thought it would be neater if I added another in the space thats available and then wire it so its ignition live. Shouldn't be too much hassle...

I installed one into the under seat plastic on my driver's seat that's wired to a switched fuse so that it's only on when the car is running. This is where I plug in my phone so I don't have to have the ashtray open or the cord draped across the center console. Modified a Rennline dash mount with steel ball to be compatible with the Steelie mount I use on my phone, so the cord comes straight up from the front of the seat to the phone that's on the dash.

I understand your frustration with having to unplug your dashcam every time you shut the car off. I also find it irritating. Rather than adding a new socket I purchased a powered accessory power outlet. It has an on/off switch so it stays plugged in to the ashtray power plug but it can be shut off . Just go to amazon and query on/off power plug in automotive.

You can easily change the 12v outlets to be ignition on. Take out the original fuse for whatever outlets you want switched. Put a spade terminal on the end of an add a circuit fuse holder and plug it into the load side of the fuse that feeds the outlets. Then plug the add a fuse into an empty spot on the fuseblock that is switched. Put the original fuse into the spot on the add a circuit fuse holder that feeds the wire with the spade terminal. Done.

That's clever!

To whomever does it this way, it will make everything on that circuit switched and not continuous so if only that one outlet is on the circuit it will become switched, but if it's multiple outlets (like footwell, center console, etc), they will all become switched.

It went well, ground was a little awkward to find at first but then easy once I spotted the screw. Will do a write up just in case it helps anyone in the future.

Once the weather is nicer I will tidy the wiring, but it works so thats a success in my book.

Not the best place to ask, but is there a specific section for starting a project thread?

Just start it here. The DIY section is specifically for how to fix and troubleshoot things yourself. You can certainly put thos project you did over there, but that's not where build projects to.

I did one when building my Misha Widebody Cayenne Turbo S - https://rennlist.com/forums/cayenne-...project-3.html
