Unhappy Bore-Scoring??

Just bought this '03 955 on auction. Exceptional condition inside and out and only 40k miles on the clock with history. Took a chance buying it without seeing, and it sounds like it has the common scoring problem. It has been standing for some time and last serviced in 2019. Opinions on this sounds please and if its worth a rebuild (considering I am not knowledgable enough or equiped to do it myself).

Ouch. Most likely scoring, but if it's not, it's certainly not good. Good rebuilds will run into the 5 digits. A used engine should run $3K-$5K to purchase, and another bunch of money for the install. Parting it out, on the other hand, well help you recover some, if not all, of your "investment"

GBP7k - it was a little steep but I was taken by the low mileage and overall condition.

1 quid would have been the right price.

What are scrap metal prices like over there?

Yep. That's almost certainly scoring. It sounds just like my 2008 CTT did.

Majpr bummer. If that mileage is correct, it is almost certainly the lowest mileage example of bore-scoring I've seen.

To learn more about bore scoring, watch this series of videos - it applies to hypereutectic aluminum Alusil or Lokasil engine blocks

If it sat a long time, any chance it's just a lifter? Early BMW e9x are notorious for ticking lifters. Seems like a local drive, keeping below 3,000 RPM on the freeway wouldn't do that much more damage.

The PCA videos also talk about soot and oil consumption. If you don't have those, you probably don't have bore scoring. Of course, you won't know until you drive it...

Is it a CTT? What climate is it from?

take it to an Indy and have it bore scoped. Knocking for sure.

My 2008 'bore-scored' Cayenne S is currently on an online Auction, hoping to recover my money. I bought it, knowing it was toast - but had some plans in place to rebuild or replace. Those plans all fell thru, so now I'm just cutting my losses. Should come out even... fingers crossed. Someone will buy it, and likely part it out (and likely make a tidy profit).

Seems within the last year - in the area I live in - the concept of any work being done on P vehicles... has gone ballistic!! Not long ago, there were a few places interested in tackling such work. Not sure what changed.... but oh well..
And I may have found my next Cayenne. A significant upgrade - 2010 GTS.

955 - non-Turbo 4.5 S. I'm in UK - South of London. I only collected the car last week and although there is service history, I have no idea if previous owner took appropriate care when driving at very cold temps.

Going to do oil and filter change later today. I won't use the standard Mobil 1 0W-40, going with 5w-40 (fully synthetic) and thinking about using an additive (any thoughts on this?).

Holding thumbs.....

If this fails then off to a specialist next week to see if there is any hope.

Changing oil will be a waste of money, at least wait until you borescope the cylinders.
