06 Turbo Fuel Economy Question

06 Turbo Fuel Economy Question
We have 3 955 Cayennes.
The 04 S gets 13.5 L/100 kms.
The 06 Turbo gets 15.5 L/100 kms and my wife drives it.
The 06 Turbo S gets 14.5 L/100 kms and I drive it.
This is all highway mileage, the Turbo S actually has 20% city driving mixed in.
How can the Turbo S get better mileage than the Turbo?
My initial thoughts were ride height as my wife had hers in the middle setting whereas mine was in the low setting. This weekend, I drove 900 kms in hers on the highway with the suspension set low and it still got 15.5 L/100 kms.
We did put a ski roof box on hers this weekend and that maybe made a slight difference.
what do you get for mileage with yours?

I get 12.5 average miles per gallon and about 500 smiles per gallon.
I have gotten as high as 17.8 and as low as 6.8.
Turbo and Turbo S should get pretty close to same mileage, but maybe the Turbo S has slightly different gearing. I do not know.

The way I understand it is, similar to a adding a tune, the S generates more power precisely because it is more efficient with the platform. Same mass with more airflow in through the intake, for example, is more efficient, which can be made into power by depressing the skinny pedal. So if you were to drive precisely next to each other, accelerate the same, cruise the same, brake the same, etc. The Turbo S should burn less fuel to do that work. But if you use the skinny pedal to out accelerate, you can burn more fuel faster for the same distance travelled (albeit, in less time).
Just my simple brain explanation. I hope that helps!

My tuned 650 HP Turbo S gets 14.7 mpg on family highway trips without the roof box (16 mpg if my wife drives it) and about 12 mpg with the Skybox and rails on it. If I'm driving that means running 80-90 mph most of the time (I set my cruise at 88 mph). I have a p3cars vent gauge and have looked at the AFR readings and they're perfect so it's not running lean.
I'm also punching a slight bigger hole through the air, so I'm fine with the SMG (smiles per gallon) I'm seeing.

One thing that I have noticed is that on long trips by myself running at aroung 80-85 mph, my mileage goes up substantially and I get around 16. With the family, cruising to the inlaws at about 74mph, the mileage goes down a bit. These rigs are geared for higher speed running.

FWIW I hit 16-17 MPG on the cluster (not a separate calc), on an '09 CTTS cruising 80 -90 ish on a 2-lane with intermittent slow downs for country towns, for ~5 hours home from Jackson Hole.

Interstate speeds here in Virginia, max of 78mph. If people stay out of my way and don't camp in the left lane, I get close to 18mpg headed east. Headed west, I get about 16.5mph. Richmond to Blacksburg and back occurs a couple times a week.

Wind resistance increases with the square of speed and the curve is steep there, requiring substantially more power. It could be true, and would be nerdy interesting to see the plot of sustained cruise speed vs MPG at that speed.
at any rate we all seem to be north of 14 and max about 17-18 for realistic “high speed” cruise…
here is a generic article on the topic…

I went to the Miami/Vtech game out there this year. What a cool experience that was. Def want to go back for a night game, and when VT is good, to see it even more rowdy.

Nice. It's a small world. I actually work with Braxton Burmeister's (previous QB) Dad and Grant Wells' Dad is my fraternity brother (same pledge class). Looking forward to next year now that the new staff and players have a year together under their belt.
