I don't know a whole lot about the newer Cayennes. A 2012 would be a 958.1 (I think). No low range on the transfer case. I don't know if you use that for backing the boat trailer in or pulling the loaded trailer up the ramp, but some do. Slower speed and more torque.
From what I've heard, the 2012 might have a vario-cam bolt issue and a transfer case issue. But overall the car is as reliable as the earlier ones. I think bore scoring was largely solved by 09-10. Not 100%, but there were changes that made it less of an issue. Again, not sure about the 958 models. I don't spend a lot of time reading that board. Most of what I know is from before the split.

In general, at least for the 955/957 cars, the Turbos don't need much more time/money for upkeep than the S models.

If you can get the newer one for a good price, I'd say go for it. But I'd read up on the 958 before you make any solid decisions.
I have decided against moving up a model. I am going to try to get a TTS in the 955 range. The interiors don’t have all the cool accoutrements that the 958s have but I know the 955, I like the low range and I’ll keep my S and have the TTS as a fun ship along with my Supercharged 928 (once the kit is done Hans!!!). I do off road the S occasionally so I do like the low range. At some of our mountain bike races we go places we shouldn’t so might as well do that with the TTS. Also, I think it would be nice to raise the suspension and do some Jeep trails in Colorado.

Bore scoring is not a 958 issue. It disappeared in 2010, even on the last of the 957 series. Porsche changed block processing (how they exposed the silicon in the bore.) That seems to have solved it. the VarioCam bolt issue was limited to 2011 cars, and there was a recall (primarily motivated by the members of this forum..) Variocam is not an issue. Overall - the 958's - now acquiring some miles on them (mine is at 105k) has been considerably less intense to own compared to the 955/957. And I can't really think of anyone who has owned a 958 who wished they had a 2-speed transfer case - that primarily seems to be a worry by the 955/957 guys (can't imagine why that is...) Have you ever used lo-range on your S? When I owned my '06, I used it once. Put it into Low Range, backed up 5 feet in the driveway, then pulled forward in the driveway - then never used it again.

Well, funny you ask about low range. I use it quite a bit. Use it when pullilng stuck people out of the ditch, use it on level b and c roads to crawl. I have decided against the 958 at this point. Was thinking diesel but kind of have my eye on a 955 TTS. I'll know more shortly. Maybe I'll have to buy one of each.

Low and Go.I would not own anything without a real transfer case and selectable low range. But I actually use it and understand most people would not go where I tend to find most enjoyment.

Well, I am now the proud owner of a 2006 Cayenne Turbo S Exclusive Edition with 110,000 on the clock. Let the games begin on Cayenne number two.

Should be pretty cool and a fun ride.
