Yes, I've already taken it off/on few times before.

You can't separate the boot from the ****. The shift **** is held by the plastic on the bottom, you just turn it around 30 degrees till it stops and the shift **** slides up pretty easily.

Installed rennline shift **** and tested it for a day. It looked so out of place and it didn't provide any noticeable improvement I was looking for. Also, for me, the cold metal shift **** is not livable on a day to day basis. Took that awful shift **** off, will be sending it back for a refund.

Thanks for reminding about the solder wire. I wrapped solder wire before on an E36 BMW and it had positive effect on shifting. Also, along with with shorter shifter rod from Z3 and with a ZHP weighted shift ****, it was the best shifting transmission I ever had.
With a cable operated shifter there are obvious limitations and I don't think it'll ever be good as the ones without cables.

Anyway so I bought a pound of soldering wire from home depot: https://www.homedepot.com/p/Oatey-1-...0252/100084935

Used pretty much all of it to wrap it around the shifter rod. Will test it for a few days and report back.

Thanks for sharing, did you get any photos of the shaft by chance?

I wrapped it around the highlighted area, and made sure it's not too close to the bottom so that it wouldn't interfere with the shifting. Then I wrapped the finished product in duct tape so that it wouldn't wear down/ tear shift boot.
It was getting dark so I didn't take the after pic.

Adding 1lb to the middle of the rod doesn't have the same leverage effect as adding weight to the top (such as via heavier shift ****) but I think it is worth a try for $25 in materials. Need to test it for a week or two to see if I'll like it

I can relate to chasing the BMW short shift! I put a short shifter in my 540i, 323 and a weighted ZHP **** then in my ZHP. Each time I wondered why I didn't do it sooner!

That shaft looks very uniforn, I'm tempted to cut mine down but recreating the machining at the top looks like it would be tricky.

yeah I wouldn't want to cut that rod since anything lower would mean that you'll be hitting armrest with your elbow when shifting

Ah that was always the game changer for me when It was a flick of the wrist instead of having to move my elbow!

Old thread but I’ve stared at the shift right solution from function first for days. I think I’m gonna bite the bullet soon and see if I can make it fit my GTS…. Possibly do the function first end pieces as well

not exactly, I would have been better off installing the eBay 997 short shifter (there’s a guy in the facebook 957 GTS manual group that did)

the yokes are different lengths so I only installed the aluminum pieces that hold the shifter

Thank you for the feedback.

So 997 Carrera short shifter works on the 957 6-speed GTS? Nice if so! I want to mate that with the 997 GT3 shift ****/boot. Should be proper! Thoughts? You think it will work?

Where the other pieces you tried to install the Function First bearings as part of their kit? I've been interested in trying to improve shift quality on the GTS as much as possible.
