Default Octane Rating

Handbook says 98RON / 95RON.
What do most people use?, if you use 95RON regularly will it cause engine wear/issues?

Thanks

Our pumps display (R+M)/2 on this side of the pond. The average of Ron + Mon.

I run the highest octane available to be safe.

955 or 957? V6 or V8? NA or turbo?

My wife runs 95 most of the time but when I gas up, I go with 99+, on both 955 TTS and 957 TT.

Actually, you can get away with running lower octane than specified.

Octane is, quite simply, knock/detonation resistance.

Most modern cars have knock sensors that will detect any detonation, and pull timing to address it (Porsche started doing it in 87).

You will lose power, but it won't hurt the motor.
I wouldn't make a habit of it, and I run premium at all times myself

He's in the US, that's equal to your 95.

Available octane varies in the US depending on the elevation in your area.
93 is normal for premium my area and what I run...that's equal to your 98.
87 is regular but areas with higher elevation use 85.

A new gas station popped up in my town and they had a great price on premium, 20¢ less than other gas stations. Not long after filling up the Cayenne there was a noticeable decrease in power. One of my turbo charged motorcycles was also giving a backfire after coming off boost...typical when running anything under 93. I don't know why I didn't bother to look before, but their "premium" is only 91. The Cayenne just dialed itself back and dropped power, the bike is from 1982 and the FI system doesn't have knock sensors, so low octane can have disastrous results. Haven't been there since.

91 octane from Shell only for me. The gas does what its supposed to do, no knocking or other issues but there is one very important reason to fill up at Shell: They have the clips so you don't have to hold the handle the entire time - that's a huge perk when its below freezing!

I've also had issues with non-branded gas stations. I strongly suspect that they aren't always honest about the octane rating of their product.

US uses a different rating system as stated above. 91 US octane rating is 95 EU RON rating. 93 US is 98 EU RON.

87 US equivalent is not sold commercially at the pumps in yerp.

Just wedge the gas cap between the pump lever and handle frame after pulling the handle - it will still auto shut-off.

In NY, the locking mechanism on the pump handle is outlawed, so all stations have them removed/disabled here. Go figure. Gotta stand there for half an hour for your 26 gal tank to fill up.

Also, the gas cap on my 957 GTS is tethered to the body. Don't think I could stretch it far enough to stick into the handle.

It's tethered and the tether gets pretty stiff when it's cold. I don't want to risk snapping it.

Mine broke long ago but the nice part is that there are small cutouts on the rim of the cap and this is where you can clip it to the fuel filler door while you fill.
