After a little trial and error testing I found the following helped:
-Stripping the insulation a little shorter than normal seemed to help, maybe 1/4"-5/16" for 16-18 ga. wire. A little longer for 12-14ga
-Slightly spreading (more like loosening) the strands and pushing them together then a little twist before slipping the connector over made for a cleaner splice. I did not use any solid wires, so no hints for that type wire.
-Use a reducer nozzle on the heat gun to direct the heat, It makes for quicker more uniform results. I didn't have one but fashioned one with heavy duty alum foil, Had to use a hose clamp to keep it on.
-Start on the ends then do the solder joint, this gets heat to the joint before you actually do the melt process so it melts faster. It also holds the wires so you can rotate the connector without the two wires twisting at the joint.
-I slid a piece of normal shrink-wrap on the wires with the connector to cover the connectors for added insulation and it just looks better. Keep it away from the joint when heating as it will begin to shrink if too close (ask me how I know).
