Rear Axle differential lock
#2
It was part of the enhanced offroad package IIRC, it wasn't a very common option. If you have it you can look from underneath the car you'll see a big electric motor hanging off the rear diff

You can also look in the left side dashboard fuse panel to see if there's a complete circuit with a fuse in it for that location (might actually be 2 of them).

Probably the simplest test is to push the 'off road' rocker switch.
1st push - low range, one LED on the little display.
2nd push - center diff lock, 2nd LED lights up.
3rd push - rear diff lock, 3rd LED lights up.
The 3rd LED will light up (all 3 will) during start up self test. But unless you actually have the locking rear diff, it won't when you push the rocker.
It's also highly unlikely that you have it. It's really rare.

There are some instructions in the owner's manual. The only time mine was ever in that mode was during the PPI 4 years ago to make sure it worked so I don't remember the details. Think you have to either be moving below a certain speed, or stopped, or maybe even have to back up to release it after it's engaged, but like I said, don't remember the specifics..

If it hasn't been used in a while, your transfer case switch motor might be dead. Check fuses and relays first.

If you drove it on the road like that it might just be that you have bind in the drive line. i.e. one side has turned more than the other and it is applying torque across the diff with enough drag to prevent the diff unlocking. No big deal but you should avoid doing that.
If this is what's going on it's an easy fix. Drive off the road on a slippery surface while trying to disengage the lock and turn left and right, even try to spin the wheels. Or, drive on the road and do the same. Or jack a wheel up off the ground.

Car in neutral, doors closed. Don't remember if the doors need to be closed for diffs, but they do need to be closed for air suspension to go up/down, otherwise you get the "not permissible" message on the dash without any further explanation - was ready to pull my hair out over this once or twice before.

Thanks, I hadn't check the replies so far.
I was able to remove the motor and gear box from the differential housing and actually got a pair of channel lock pliers and turned the shaft two positions back towards the left and I was able to disengage it,
Porsche wanted $3,500.00 for iffy solutions....replacement of the module etc...

Rear Axle differential lock
Hello all there
just new on the forum, i posted my presentation .... but I do not know if it is in the good section.
So concerning this old thread, I have a 2004 3.2 V6 cayenne with pneumatic suspension.....working well for the moment but.... surprisingly my button for low range and central lock is not working.
I went to the right door fuse panel and no fuse and no wires in fuse panel on central lock fuse concerned numbers : 7 and 40 !!! Someone has an idea?
Thanks a lot by advance
