Default Wheel Locks, no key

My new-to-me Cayenne Turbo came with wheel locks, but no key. These locks are different than the ones on my 968. On the 968 there is a racetrack-shaped groove on the face of the nut. On the Cayenne, the face is plain, but the OD of the head, instead of being a hex has a series of many rolling hills.

What's the best way to get them off? I was hoping that there would be a key number in one of the owner's manuals, since it looks like a key can be ordered for $40 if you know the lock number but I haven't found anything.

Second question, once they're off, do I need to get replacement normal lug bolts from the dealer, or are they a generic size that I could get at NAPA.

cheers,
c

You might be able to hammer on a regular socket that is slightly smaller than the nut. However, you may also completely round out the nut if it slips.

Noooooo! Go to the dealer. They have a complete set and can get you a replacement key. I had to do it about 5 years ago and it cost me about $65. You get a new key and a spare matched lug. Make sure you have a registration in your name to show them.

Cheers,

Been there — done that.

The dealer will have the master kit to get them off. They can order you a new key, too.

However, I would just recommend you replace them with regular nuts.

I went the full monty and replaced all the lugs and a new set of locking nuts. Then a few days later I lost the new key!

After that I just went with regular nuts. No one has stolen my wheels.

Turbosocket and new bolts. There is absolutely no point to having the locks - they are just a pain in the ***. A wheel thief will have a turbo socket and an electric impact gun.

Yeah, I agree with the suggestions, at this point I just want them gone. I got my first Porsche around 1992 ('89 944) and been putting up with annoying Porsche locking lugs on my daily driver for 3 cars and 25 years now. This car lives indoors, no one is stealing anything.

AutoHauzAz has the non-locking replacements for only $2.57

http://www.autohausaz.com/pn/FB-WHT001693

I'm already committed to $10 to replace the lugs, so now it's just a matter of removing them for the least amount of cash. New key at the dealer for $65 is a possibility (and VERY good to know about, thanks TomF), but at this point I think I'd rather either buy a tool for $20 from Amazon if anyone knows one that will work on this style, or slip $20 to a tech at my local custom wheel place who I'm assuming has tools for this. Or I may just go crazy and try hammering on a socket.

cheers,
c

Are you on good terms with the dealer?

They have all of them in their master kit.

Get the new bolts, then go to the dealer and have them take out the locking ones. Put the new ones in yourself.

And kinda a "Captain Obvious" question, but did you look in the back?

The socket for the locking lugs is supposed to be in the spare tire well. It may have fallen down and rolled under the spare.

I'm on good terms with the parts guy. I spent about an hour and a half with him looking up and ordering about 6 parts for the 968 and 955. The Porsche system seems to be that they look up part numbers and prices in the computer at the parts desk, but then have to write the numbers down on a post-it note and travel to the other end of the dealership (service) to find out the actual availability of said parts. Kind of a crazy (and slow) system. On the other hand, it allows you lots of time to bond with the guy at the parts counter.

At this point I have gone all through the car, including removing the spare but the key is not present.

I do have one hail-Mary play that I'm trying. I bought the car from a guy who flipped it. Inside, I found a garage door remote, RFID for a gate entry system, registration and license plate from the previous owner (registration was renewed by her in Jan of this year). She lives pretty close, and from Redfin/Zillow I can see that she's been in her same house for a couple of years. I mailed her belongings to her yesterday along with a letter saying that if she has any service records, spare keys, wheel lock key, etc. I'd appreciate a call-back. So, who knows, maybe I'll get lucky. I bet you any amount that her garage remote that I mailed still opens her house (and it's a very nice house), so hopefully she's grateful enough to dig around for me a bit....

cheers,
c

Buy the new lugs. When they arrive, drive to the dealer and have them exchange them.

My dealer did it for free, but I did buy the lugs from them. Don't think it cost much more than $5 or so each.

Independent Porsche shop will have the tools, too.

I called my local dealer and used the part number I found in another thread: 955-361-957-01-xxx

https://rennlist.com/forums/porsche-...nut-locks.html

The guy who answered remembered me "Hey are you the guy with the 968?" and I remembered him "Yup. You have the GTI, right?". He said that it's no problem to try their master key set and find the right one. He also said that a replacement key is only $17. Wow, wasn't expecting it to be that cheap! So, I'm headed over in an hour to get the key ordered. In the mean-time, I ordered (4) plain lug bolts from AutoHausAZ because I needed stuff from them anyway and had to hit the free shipping minimum. So, it looks like it's all going to work out. Thanks for the help everyone.

cheers,
c

Here's the update. When I got to Porsche of Chandler to order the key, one of the guys at the parts counter said "Do you really want the key, or do you just want the locks off?" Actually, I just want the locks off, he says "We'll do that for free, I think we have the lugnuts in-stock". That's when I confessed that I had already ordered the lugnuts from AutoHausAz ($2.50/ea vs $10/ea Porsche). He says "That's ok, we'll swap them out for you for free anyway." And they did.

Shout-out to Porsche of Chandler. Nothing but excellent experiences with them so far.

cheers,
