When to change oil/ how much?

Cost me $145.00 up here in Anchorage...I have heard everywhere from 3500 mile-20,000 miles for an oil-change...anyone know what the official recommendation is? My dealer changed it out at 3000! AK

It also depends how hard you drive if you are ***** out you might want to change it at 3000-5000 miles and check the color, but if grandma is driving the car you could well get into the 20,000 mile range. It is just personal opinion.

It would seem to be a matter of personal opinion but it shouldn't be; at least not an arbitrary one. A 3k recommendation is a self serving one that many oil change centers make. This was probably true at some point in the past but ordinary modern oils and filters can last much longer. Synthetic oil, like Mobil One, will go even longer before breakdown so 20k is realistic for the life of the oil. Contamination with acid from moisture condensation can be a problem but modern engines warm up much faster, driving off the moisture. Capacity of the filter is another issue but I'm not getting into that.
On my X-5 there is a gauge that determines when you need an oil change based on the way the car has been driven. It would be nice if the Cayenne had something similar to alert the driver but, as far as I know, there isn't anything. Actually the X-5 alert seemed to be pretty punctual right at 15k so the amount of driving input the computer accepts could be minimal. Still, an oil change warning light would be good for the absent minded among us.
BTW, my manual says 20k between oil changes and emphasis the use of Porsche recommended oils (Mobil One) with the caveat that you should change oil and filter at 6k if you use leaded gasoline. If you don't mind paying the price, there is certainly nothing wrong with changing sooner (environmentalists would probably disagree). I will probably change at 10k.

There actually is an alert that tells you it's time to change the oil. I had my oil changed as per my dealers request at 7,500 miles. However, at 12,000 miles, my alert came on and said it was time to change the oil (it's the same beeping sound you get on startup when you are low on fuel). I called my dealer and they said that they didn't know that there was a warning for the oil service, but they managed to reset it for me on my next visit.
I was told that the alert system in the Cayenne is apparently very similar to what is out there on the other German cars (BMW and Mercedes). It takes into account your driving style along with the number of times the engine has been turned over and a few other things (not sure what they all are).
Anyway, Porsche does indeed have an oil change warning system and I saw mine appear at about 12,000 miles.

Thanks Karl. You know, I had thought I remembered reading that the Cayenne had just such a monitor but when I researched it before posting I couldn't find it anywhere, so I assumed I dreamed it up. It's not mentioned in the manual that I can see.
