As stated, get the newest/best condition Boxster you can afford. Same goes for any car, really.
I drove a 2.7L and then the 3.2L S that I ended up buying...big difference in the seat of your pants. I love the exhaust sound with the top down and stepping into the pedal. The S has 18 inch wheels and the M30 suspension with bigger brakes which I like. You really don't need to worry about modding the engine for performance either...for an 18 year old car, she'll go like a cut cat and keep up with bigger boys on the block. These cars carve up the corners nicely, right from the factory as well.
The best advice I can give you...is buy what YOU want...don't worry about what others prefer...year, engine, options, colours, etc.
Just my 2 cents.
Happy hunting!

Burning Brakes
I hope the OP has bought and enjoyed by now.
I'm of the less is sometimes better school and I enjoyed my '99 2.5L as much as my '01S 3.2L. Why? Because it had less acceleration and it asked more of me as the driver in terms of anticipation and gear selection. Yes the S 3.2 is more powerful and has bigger brakes. But I could keep my right foot down harder and longer without getting stupid in the smaller engined car. I should also confess to owning a 1.3L Giulietta Spider Veloce, a 1.6L Giulia Spyder and a 1.6L Porsche 914 with all of 85 HP that was as much fun as any of these 5, HP and even torque isn't everything.

I restored a '73 914 2.0L back in the day...good times.
The owner had stored it in a barn with the windows down, and raccoons got into it and tore it up. You couldn't tell if there were seats, and I even had to get rid of the fuel injection entirely. The wiring was chewed up in the engine and the seats were trashed along with the carpeting.
I went with a VW intake and a carb instead. Fresh gas and she fired up. I also had to fix a hacker body job and repainted her Grand Prix white, the original colour. She felt like a go-kart on the road...a really fun car.
Those are great points Mike - it can be more fun to drive a slow car fast, then a fast car slow.

Racer
Back in the early 1980's I owned a 78 Fiat X1/9 1.3L 5 speed. I used to race on the streets all the time. At least I thought of it as racing. No one else thought it was racing cause the little thing was SO SLOW. And because it was slow I never had to slow down for turns. This was a car that even 'driven fast' was dog slow. Still, that car was a ton of fun!
