Help in sorting out fault codes
Fault codes = need help
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
OK guys... could use some help here.
I have re-done my entire cold air return system for the emissions system on my 99 Box. Believe me... I was super careful in doing the job right and used all new parts and took my time to do things correctly. Granted the battery was disconnected for awhile (searched forums to see that may have caused one of my faults...). Also, I have noticed multiple tiny cracks in the gas cap sealing o-ring. My AOS has very few miles on it (less than 5K), Throttle body is clean (in fact new and increased in size from Pedro my man). Also just got done with putting in new water pump and new lower temp thermostat from LN too (not sure if any of this has to do with the CEL...)
Now after 250 to 300 miles after completing the work I got the CEL light.
Came up with these two codes...
P1602 fault code 660 CAN timeout instrument cluster
P 0446 fault code 95 shutoff valve acivated
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance for your help!
Joel

If P0446 comes back that can be a purge valve acting up, a pinched line to the valve (you messed with the intake system so you might have a line pinched) or possibly even a charcoal canister problem.
The P1602 I think is related to the battery being disconnected.

Thanks bro. I have been meaning to replace the gas cap - now I have good reason to.
Where is the charcoal canister? Is that something that is common to fail?
Thanks Macster - you are the best my man!

But before you start wrenching I mentioned canister because my OBD2 error code references mention it as a possible explanation for the error code. But it is down on the list.
The canister can fail. The car is a '99 model and that canister has absorbed a lot gasoline fumes and then given them up over the years. If the previous owner(s) overfilled the tank this can subject the canister to exposure to liquid gasoline which is not the best thing for canister longevity.
Even with no exposure to liquid gasoline the thing has a finite life span. Vibration and what have you take their toll.
Before you suspect the canister though as I like to point out the last thing touched is the first thing suspected and you were at the engine/intake system. There is a line to the intake manifold that is used to extract what vapor the canister has accumulated. There is another line from the engine compartment to the canister that supplies air to the canister, this air flows through the canister and removes the accumulated vapors. The lines are controlled by valves which are operated by the DME at the proper time.
If these lines have been disturbed, disconnected, pinched, or just cracked due to age -- old lines do not take kindly to being moved about as they are old and dry and can crack -- a line not the canister or valve can be the cause of the error code.
Replace the cap. Clear the codes. Drive the car around as you would normally. If the P0446 code comes back then you can consider your next step.
