Default Installing a 996 dash display on a 986 ?

Is it possible to install a 996 dashboard, (i.e.: to have oil pressure) on a 986 ?
Anybody did any research/project/work on that "upgrade" ?

it's not bad. you do have to replace the oil pressure sensor with the variable version & run an extra wire from the sensor to the dash. also, do NOT buy a C4 version. gas gage won't work right.

if I recall, pull your gage cluster & match w/ a 996C2 version with the same color plugs.

Check out this DIY article on the Pelican site:

Thanks to both of you.
The article on Pelican is pretty complete and from that, all is clear !
I had some hopes that it could have been simpler, not realizing that the sensor have to be different, and in need of an additional wire !

I would love to have an oil pressure manometer, ..but, I doubt that I want to enter into "run another cable" from the engine to the dash !
Well, the good point now is that I have all the info to make it !
Thanks again.

Its an easy job to run the wire - so dont let that put you off.

You can run it along the centre console, through the firewall where the gear cables go through and up to the sensor.

Thanks BestGear for the support and motivation on this one.
You are right, one wire is not that much, ..to have real oil pressure reading !
I'm just surprised that we do not read more about this possible serious upgrade !

I have few more "mods" (i.e.: bk bar, bucket seats, 6 points harness, etc..) to do, and then will consider seriously this one.

I highly recommend the upgrade. Here's my story.

I'm a bit slow to react, but the more I'm thinking about having my oil pressure monitored, I'm also thinking about data logger.
The "wire mod" to the cluster will do the trick for the reading.
..But, the ECU will remain "out of the loop" for this info ! I suppose that it would be a very difficult option to use a 996 ECU, and wire the oil pressure to the ECU (!!! new wire harness, or "impossible mission" !!) and get the data logger reading the ECU, like they "all" do with a 996 !

My comment is that Porsche, as a manufacturer of "SPORT" cars, did PRETTY BAD by suppressing oil pressure gauge when making and selling a car with the engine on the center !
This is VERY UGGLY. When I think that the nick name of the Cayenne is "P!ig", I wonder what the name of the guy that decided to remove the oil pressure on the 986 dashboard should be.

Boxster was the entry level. Gotta trim some of the fat to keep it that way. Not to mention the target demographic are unlikely to care, let alone know what to do with the information of what the oil pressure is doing.

That being said, maybe I'm fickle, but the one thing that is keeping me from doing this swap is I cannot find a Carrera cluster with the same font I have on my Boxster...
