Boxster S Vs 993
#16
Don't buy one or the other because of what other people think, buy what you like. I could care less if there is "boxster snobbery" or "993 vs 996" debates, it's all just a bunch of hot air. Buy what you like, enjoy it and be happy, there is no one else to please but yourself.
If it makes you feel better, I'll be happy for your whichever car you decide, and like others have suggested if you can afford both then go for it!
And in case you were wondering, it has been 36 days since I bought my last Porsche...

You can't lose
There's no wrong answer. Both great cars, but very different cars. Luckily I can have both, but don't make me choose between them. And don't let others tell you what to get. My best advice is don't switch unless you've driven the other car extensively, and have a burning desire to make the switch. If you haven't driven the other car extensively, rent one for a weekend (of course this only applies to renting a boxster because it's a current model; I doubt you could find a 993 to rent). Good luck.

Interesting post - the local dealer gave me a new Boxster for the weekend while my 993TT is in for some repairs. I must say I really enjoyed the Boxster for a long trip (from San Francisco to Lake Tahoe and back). The seats and ergonomics are better than the 993TT (at least for me) and the handling was quite nice - very easy to drive in comparison to any of the older 911s. In fact, I was so taken with the car I am thinking of selling or trading my slightly modified 930 for a Boxster S (my 930 has 480 HP, but my 993TT has more than that so I can live with less HP). The Boxster does not have the cosmetics of the 993 or the 930, but it is a very nice package. Plus that great trunk room was a nice bonus.
Any takers? My 930 has a 3.4 twin plug engine personally assembled by Stephen Kaspar at Imagine Auto that is still under warranty.

I agree with LeeR. Both cars are great but so totally different. Even down to engine sounds - both great but totally different. Drive the Boxster extensively before you switch - I love both and still can not tell the wife which will go, if either. It's an on going debate in the house. Each time I drive either, I tell the wife - "listen to that sound. Can you hear it?" She then tells me "that's what you said about the other car"
I figure I can stall a couple more years before she figures I'm a total loss, just in time for a 997 turbo. Good luck

Bill (ZCAT3), When we were together at Willow Springs a few months ago you were ready to sell the 993TT and take the 930 on a drive around the country. What happened?
I'm glad you got the Boxster bug. You have to drive one to appreciate it, that's why I think people who are thinking about getting one should rent one for the weekend. Two of my friends drove my car, and although they were not in the market for a car, each one immediately went out and bought a new one. Never heard of anyone who after driving a Boxster didn't like it.
When I bought mine, I was about to order a 2000 996 in late 1999, and I had the opportunity to drive a Boxster on mountain roads, and the day after that drive I ordered the Boxster instead of the 996.
I think that driving the Boxster around the country would be great, while doing the same in the 930 would be nuts. I've driven the Boxster on two round trips from LA to San Francisco, and it's great on long distances, as well as tooling around town. Of course it's best in the twisties.
Only thing to watch is that if you lose it, it spins like a top. I've changed the front tire size from 205 to 225(both 17), and that helps reduce the understeer.
Does Michele like the Boxster? She knows how it spins as she was right behind me at Buttonwillow on one of my spins.
Regards, Lee.

Midwest, the Boxster is Ocean Blue. My favorite blues are, in order of priority:
1. Iris Blue
2. Cobalt Blue
3. Lapis Blue
4. Zenith Blue
5. Tie: Ocean Blue and Midnight Blue
Wild card: Riviera Blue
When I ordered my Boxster the dealer talked me out of Zenith Blue, saying most people didn't like it, and it would be hard on resale. I was on the fence at the time so I went with Ocean Blue. Now I prefer Zenith, and it is much more rare than Ocean. When I ordered my car, only Zenith and Ocean were available (at $800), where as other blues were something like $3000+ extra, so I passed on spending the extra money. I didn't order the 993TT, but bought it in 4/2002, so color was just one of many issues, and I like the whole package on the car, including the rare midnight blue/marble gray two color interior and full factory carbon fiber.
