The most durable boxer advice ?

Little things go wrong that you may or may not care about -- but will drive your daughter (and ultimately you) nuts.
window regulators that cause funky window/locking issues.
plastic rear windows that crack and need replacement (pre-02)
headlamp switches that go out, ignition switches that stick and fail.
The fuel related CEL -- could be a nefarious valve or a just a gas cap seal,
but often a pain for someone untrained to figure out.
MAF CEL from overfilling the oil.
WP that weep or fail
idler pulleys that have bearing failures
Coolant housings that split
Drain plugs that clog, and when it rains water runs into the car and
destroys the immobilizer.
I've also had problems with batteries -- put a cheap Harbor Freight maintainer on it -- and no problems what so ever.
But for her ease, I'd get one of those cigarette lighter chargers. If you drive it every day -- not a problem.
Sit for a week -- and you might.
The oil change is simple problem -- mail her a ton of oil filters and drop
ship her the oil you want her to put in :-)
All in all it's a great car -- I daily drove one for 4 years.
Lot more storage than you would think.
If that car is a 30K miler -- do the IMSB, change the fluids, change the tranny fluid, change the WP. Cross your fingers.
Your daughter will love it 95% of the time -- and you'll pull your hair out those 5%ers :-)
Something else -- you'll still have issues -- and she's likely to not love it as much :-)

As I was driving into work -- I thought of another reason and budgetary item.
As the dad of a 8th grade daughter -- I can see the value in buying the Boxster
and budgeting a couple Dad/Daughter visits to "address those Boxster" issues
that are bothering you :-)
What a great excuse to spend a long weekend visiting your daughter!

BTW, it's a BoxSter, not Boxer. You didn't seem to pick up on this from the other posters in the thread.

Essentially the Same engine, slightly different IMS which is not retrofit able.
Unless you can get a DFI which I think is 2010 or newer. No Ims there.
Most of the rest of the car would be similar for sand model year of Boxster
Due to economics, I gravitate to the early 2000 Boxsters. A lot of bang for the buck.

I recently purchased a 2000 base 986. My thoughts selecting that year was to avoid the casting problems of the 2.5l engines and the single-row IMS bearing of the 2001 and later cars. Jake's said there are some single-row IMS bearing engines floating around in 2000 year cars but maybe there's some replacement back stories there.

The only thing I can think to add to what Macster said is a car with extremely low miles has sat more than it has been enjoyed.
I would want to address the IMSB, water pump, AOS and RMS before turning it loose on the road.
I have seen cars be in incredible shape, have a major engine problem just because it has sat for so long.
If the car is a 2004 for example, at 30k it has only been driven 3000 miles a year!
