Weight saving, ..not dragging lead so badly positioned in your car
In my goal to have a car ready for Autocross and Track Days, but that will remain 100% street legal, I went through different paths.
One is to have a good engine. In this direction, I choose a Boxster S.
Currently, my 3.2 seems to be in good shape, with it’s 60’000 miles, and this, even, if it has a good load of “R1” !
Sure, moving to a 3.6 with “performance/street” option is very attractive, but it is also quite expensive. For the moment, I will stay put on that one.
(Seems that my good 3.2 do represent a quite small “Core Value” !!)
Another path is to remove weight.
Imo, the first goal is to look at the big chunks first.
One that I do really not like is the lead Acid battery, that in both 986 and 996, is so badly positioned, i.e.: it the top of the truck, leveling the surface of the dash board.
..And this could represent in average something like 45 lbs (or about 20kg) !
Since a good time, I did a search on what could be a good solution to replace this mass of lead by a pack of Lion, ..but not going to spend the amount that the Porsche solution “requires”, i.e.:
http://jalopnik.com/5527441/porsches...y-what-you-get
!!!!!!!!
I found a solution (just on the way to place an order now) that should make a good saving:
i.e.: get a “Performance Pack”, appropriate for a sport cars, that consists of a Lion Battery, that has been engineered and assembled in USA.
That Lion Battery, made for this purpose, is a lead acid direct replacement
They offer two levels of solutions:
. a “performance pack”, i.e.: 1.6 lbs (0.72kg) !!!! and 12 to 14 Ah
. a “day to day pack”, i.e.: 13 lbs (less than 6 kg) and 40 Ah)
The company is www.lithiumstart.com/
I will go for the “performance pack”, and will let you know what’s up.
I feel that replacing about 45lbs of lead, by a box of 1.6lbs of Lion, and this, at this particular bad position (dashboard level !) is an very good starting point on my “weight shaving” mission !
Do any of you runs already on low weight battery ?
How many Ah available you have ?
..and how much it weight ?
