What made Carrera 3.2 more hp than a 2000 Boxster S?
I'm wondering What, if anything, made the 2000 Carrera 3.2 more hp than a 2000 Boxster S?
911 3.2 304 hp
Boxster S 3.2 only 250hp?
Cams?
Intake?
Exhaust?
CPU?
?

Didn't the 2000 911 come with a 3.4l engine? Or even a 3.6l engine? I forget when the transition from 3.4l to 3.6l occurred in the 996 911 but it was somewhere in/around 2000.
sjfehr is right I think with that sales and marketing comment. The differences are probably in the cams (probably in the basic cam timing not so much as lift) and with the engine controller.

I've heard you can upgrade a Boxster to Cayman power levels with just an ECM flash, so the rumor has some truth, but going to be tough to upgrade a 3.2L to 3.4L power levels without a lot of work.

The research I've done so far indicates a few hp can be gleaned from intake and minor exhaust mods, but I don't plan to go further than a few worthwhile bolt-ons.
My 911 taught me that P-car mods do not respond like hot rodding my V8s.

Not only the 3.4 was bumped to 3.6 (diffs between 996 gen 1 and gen 2), but also arrival of Variocam Plus with the 3.6.
To had both, (a 3.4 and later a 3.6) I can say that there is a HUGE difference between the two.
On paper, ..only 20hp, but on the driver seat, it feels like a LOT more. (Thanks in good part to Variocam Plus)

Ship your car to Jake Raby at FlatSixInnovations. You'll have matching numbers and unmatched power. Hurry. Waiting list is growing.

Just read on Panorama a story ..about a Cayman that went on vacation there, ..and came back with a 9A1 bored to 4.2l, this looks pretty brillant!
..But, in my opinion, (if no limit on budget), the best of all is a Ruf 3800S.
Btw, I do not have a Boxster yet, but, very actively looking for one (after 30 years non stop of multiple 911's as daily, and a recent shift to a Panamera 4S for that).
As. I have an engine conversion on mind, i.e.: like a Carrera 3.6 or 3.8, I'm checking first what is the "good year" to buy.

No conversion needed.. Converting doesn't create a vehicle with a hand built, big bore engine. We'd much rather execute old fashioned hotrod ding as just bolting something else in.
The 4.2 in that Cayman featured in Pano was built from the OE 3.4 engine from that car.

I would like to :
.. say sorry to LaughaC for being a bit out of subject on his topic,
and
..say thank you to Jake Raby for his good answer.
Reading Jake's answer, and going to Jake's site to read the rich and good texts about his experience make me think about the "risks of bolting in an quite unknown" engine, where, the donor will remain not known, as I also just understand that in pretty much all the cases, the original DME (with all the memory of the engine) ..do remain with the "chassis" ! (this is pretty bad !)
So, may be the safest way, is to get a 3.2 ("S"), ..and "adapt" it according to the life you live with the car !
