Default Dead animal smell

A customer just dropped her Boxter off a minute ago and its smells awful! I am pretty sure it is coming from under the dash...any clues before I duct tape my nose and go looking?

Sounds like there's a dead mouse some where. Has it been sitting for a while ?

WEAR GLOVES! They may look harmless but contact can transmit nasty, treatment-resistent viruses.

Check around the cowl under the front trunk.

Look for seed hulls and other small berry remnants as well as their inevitable "by-product" that look like grains of brown rice

They also like to pull out interior insulation strand by strand to build their nest, so check for strands of fiber that look out of place.

Clean with 90% rubbing alcohol, and place an open baggie of some sort of odor absorbent for 1-2 weeks in the interior near the area, or within the HVAC ductwork.

Until then, drive with the top down

Did you ever end up finding the culprit ? Can't believe she drove around for two weeks like that.

Some people can put up with a lot. Some years back an ex-coworker bought a nice new BMW.

He and his wife had a baby.

Months later another co-worker told me that he went to visit this couple and rode in the BMW and it stank to high heaven but the couple appeared to be unfazed by the stench.

At my last job, we had an old Cadillac ETC that came in with a horrid smell. They guy asked us to remove his 5 foot pet boa constrictor that escaped, and crawled up by the heater. Well it got stuck. We refused the work because the car couldnt be inside, and even with the windows up, it could be smelled 3 parking spots away. The guy ended up having his insurance total the car.

I could never imagine that, I guess we do all have different tolerances, but for me even if I go to pick up a pizza I pretty much have to defuse the car afterwards or at least put the windows down for a bit.

Porshephile 924 That sounds horrible, wonder if anyone attempted to clean it.

I'm certain the only successful way to clean it is with a Molotov cocktail
