Default IMS bearing upgrade?

Hi. I've been lurking around the forum for a month now. I'm going to be purchasing an 01 S in a couple weeks. Currently having a PPI done and will make my decision after that. I'll be the 2nd owner.

Just wanted some advice. The engine is a 2004 replacement (warranty) engine with 1000 miles and the body has 30000 miles. The car has been stored in a warehouse and oil has been changed once a year at a Porsche dealership. I've read a lot about IMS issues in several forums and it makes me nervous. Considering the engine has ony 1000 miles on the clock, I wonder if I should wait a while. The car is out-of-state so I'll be driving it 1400 miles to Texas after the sale. Would it be a good idea to have the IMS upgrade done right away? I was thinking of having it done by the Porsche technician who has serviced the car since it was new. Thanks.

I'd wait until you need a new clutch.

Default Get the oil checked out before buying.

As a part of the pre purchase inspection have them drain the oil and look at the filter carefully and strain the oil for any debris. Extra money well spent. It is unlikely they'll find any metal shavings or plastic bits (from the plastic in the bearing seal). If you find shavings either negotiate or walk away. That was my mistake. I bought a care with a relatively fresh engine only to find metal shavings and plastic bits on my first oil change 2 weeks later. I could have bargained with him a little more. Now she's at the shop getting an IMS and a clutch. Better safe than sorry.

In your case, I seriously doubt the bearing is coming apart so soon. So keep a close eye on your oil. Change it religiously 5k intervals and possibly install a magnetic drain plug. Finally find a local Porsche specialist that is willing to break apart the filter at every oil change an inspect alongside you for debris.

Flat 6 Innovations is also in the process of creating an IMS failure detector. Look on their site for more details. I have no idea how it works but you can keep an eye on it when you engine is higher in miles yet you're not quite ready to drop $2000 on the IMS retrofit.

Hope this helps... Go for it and happy motoring..

Cheers

How many miles do you expect to get on a clutch?

Thanks for your suggestions. I realized that if I had the upgrade done in Michigan, I wouldn't be able to bring the car back if there was a problem. Doh. I will attempt to do the oil changes myself and always check the filter for metal particles. I heard about the IMS failure detector from Flat 6 but I will wait for people's feedbacks before I decide if it's worth it. Great to be in this forum.
