Default 2001 Boxster S mods

I am thinking about some mods to my 2001 Boxster S to liven it up a bit vs looking for a new vehicle. Mods considered are the complete Fab Speed exhaust (headers thru maxflow mufflers), EVO air intake and Softronics S/W remapping. Anyone had experience with these or other modification thoughts? I use the car for sunny days, street only, not the track. Thanks

I have the cat back Fabspeed exhaust. The materials and fit are good. I have heard the headers are a work of art.

As for sound, I am hot and cold on it.

Idle and start up, much better

I used to love the sound of the intake, but it is now overwhelmed by the exhaust. The exhaust sounds very "muffler induced" at 2-3500 rpm. What I am trying to say is that at those engine speeds (under load) it sounds like air being forced through a system to produce a sound. Synthetic, I guess.

At higher rpm's it is glorious, because it seems to open up and now you get a touch of intake added in. That, I REALLY like.

At highway speeds, there is a bit of drone, which I have gotten used to. At first it really bothered me, and now... I still feel it is kinda "forced" sounding, but it is not a deal breaker.

If I would do it again, I would go headers, cat bypass, and maybe the "pedro-style" hack on the mufflers, if that muffler hack wouldn't pan out, I would re-up for the Fabspeed.

Hi tbeherns, your on the right track for doing bolt on improvements without affecting the drive-ability of the car. Check out the Fabspeed website for all products and video clips of what have for your car, but recommend doing the full package. It consists of the Headers with HJS Sport Cats, Maxflo Mufflers with Tips, Air Intake and the EVOMS ECU tune to compliment all the hardware upgrades and make a nice horsepower improvement. Let me know when you are ready to do the upgrades and I will make you a nice member discount. PM me if you have any questions.
Thanks for the feedback guys.

BTW, I spoke to Alex at Fabspeed when my exhaust was originally installed and I was really not happy about the drone. He was very helpful and together with my installer we figured out what it was and the drone is much much reduced.

I drove the car again today at lunch and when on the go in 2nd, through 5th gears it wails. I am very happy I got the Fabspeed exhaust.

Thanks for the input, what was the problem causing the drone? Did you do the EVO intake also?

The drone was caused by some of the tubing touching parts of the undercarriage, and also, most importantly the length of the tips. When we made the tips stick out a bit more, the drone was reduced a lot. My installer explained that an exhaust is like a wind instrument, like a tuba. If you vary the length, it changes the tone.

I have not tried an intake because I loved the sound as is and all the failed MAF sensors getting fouled up by over oiling the elements scared me off.

If you go down the air intake road, be careful and follow the instructions closely.

New seats !!! The standard Porsche seats are crap, and give very little lateral support. Buy original GT3 seats or Recaro Pole Position. You will lose 50lbs of dead weight, and have a much more comfortable seat with excellent lateral support. If you enjoy spirited driving and hard cornering, a good seat that holds you in place is the best upgrade for your car!

I'd also say new seats. Recaro PP are a good option, but not if you're tall. Cobra Imola Pro is a good alternative for taller guys.
I think weight savings is a good way to improve performance on these cars.
