Default Boxster Purchase recommendations

Visiting from the 993 section…. I have a friend looking for his first Boxster purchase. This would be a weekend driver, looking to stay around 15k.
Any particular year better than others?
The 996 has RMS issues, anything to be aware of in the Boxsters?
Any other advise on purchase other that PPI being a must?

Newer is always better. 2003 and later models came with glass rear window. Not sure what $15K buys you nowadays. I have not kept up on used Boxster prices.

The Boxster engine has same issues as the 996 engine. The engines are pretty much the same.

First and foremost the Boxster is just a used car. Give it the same in-depth high resolution going over you would give any used car.

Look for any reason not to continue considering the car. Misuse. Abuse. Neglect. Poor quality body or paint work.

Only when you can find no reason to reject the car and have a strong feeling you can buy the car for your price, or come to an agreeable price with the seller then have PPI done. Place performing the PPI should have the ability to pull overrev counts from car's engine controller. Post counts here for comment.

Rule is you only PPI one car, the one you end up buying.

Another rule is if you find something you don't like, walk away. There's always another car.

Sincerely,

Macster.

986 era Boxsters will have the same sorts of issues as the 996 911's. $15K should get him an early 2000's "S".

With a PPI and that budget he will have access to lots of good cars!

So I should never try to sell my car, it suffers from all of the above

Thanks for the input, I forgot about the glass rear window, that is a great point, keep it coming...

Would consider a base Boxster is the car will be a weekend cruiser. Agree $15K could buy an '00 S but will have to look hard. Lots more base cars in that range. I've got an '02 S with the plastic window but don't have any issues with it (garage kept and kept well cleaned). Plastic a bit lighter and larger with better visibility. Assuming your friend also in NC, lack of a defroster shouldn't be an issue.

I have to say I kind of like my plastic rear window. More in keeping with the true spirit of a convertable sports car. However, my car is a pleasure car. Were it a daily driver I might appreciate the defroster. Back to the other side, if I were doing a lot of top-up driving I would appreciate the greater size of the plastic window. In other words, visibility is less bad with the plastic.

Plenty of Boxsters for sale at good prices. I'll echo the thought about feeling free to walk away from something that doesn't seem right.
