New Owner, need help with trunk release
This may sound stupid ,but I just purchased a '98 Boxster
had it towed home. The battery is dead so Zero elec. working.
I tried opening up front trunk(to charge battery) and could not open
either trunk. Is there a trick to this ?How hard should I pull up on
the levers?(I don't want to break them). The Pbrake is on and nothing,
it just is stuck. Is there any other way to charge battery?Does the battery
need to be charged to open trunk?
Sil (what a dumb first post)

You can buy a charger that works through the cigarette lighter.
IIRC, there is a technique to access a wire that is inside the front fender/bumper. you pull the wire and the latch releases. Do a search here, or Petes Boxster Board or the 986forum.
Bummer.. but don't let it get you down!

Well ,tried trickle charging for 30 min. two nights in a row.Still no
hood/trunk release. The lights lit dimmly ,and signal lights lit up,but no
trunk release.
Gerrygug, this is my first Boxster but not my first Porsche.Have a '93
928 GTS and before that had a'80 928 Euro.Yeah you might have
guessed I came over from lurking on the 928 side.
As for Porsche's they are great, just cut the check and don't dwell
on the bills,and you'll have a blast.

Don't think the 98's had a power trunk.
You will maybe need to pull a little harder. Dumb question but you have the drivers door open right?
The levers will not open otherwise.
On the front bumper behind the plastic circle cap should be a wire that you pull will open the front trunk. The small plastic cap is on the front and you will need a medium size flat head screwdrive to pry it out.
Then when you get the front trunk open there is a black plastic cover over the battery.
Pull it off and go get yourself a new battery from some autoparts store.

According to the Bentley manual, 1997-2000 Boxsters have manual front trunk releases, and those work normally even with a dead battery.
The 2001-2004 Boxsters (and presumably later models) can only be opened electrically, so if your car's battery goes dead, you need a second 12-volt battery and jumper cables to release the front trunk latch. Here's what you do:
Open the main fuse cover on the driver's kick panel. Toward the bottom, you'll find a red emergency button. The button has on it a symbol of a Boxster with the hood open. You pull that red button outward about an inch.
Now attach your red jumper cable from the positive side of your external battery to the metal part of that red button. Clamp the black jumper cable from the negative battery post to the door striker. Then lift the trunk release, and it should work.
Good luck!

Thanks guys for all the help.I found an old lighter plug in to an A.C
outlet I bought from Porsche years ago to keep the battery from dying(winter).
Plugged it in and about 1 1/2 hours later went out, locked and unlocked the door and sure enough interior light went on and trunk release worked.I better not misplace this handy little trickle charger (conditioner).
