Default Best wheels for snow tires?

Hello all,

What do you think would be the best wheels for snow tires? The car is a 2001 S. It's got 18s on it now. Will it fit 17s? I'd like to go as narrow as possible.

Any suggestions? Anyone selling something? I would want something ratty.

Thanks

I guess July is a bad time to ask. I really would like to know though.

You could pick up an inexpensive set of standard 17" Twists off Craigslist and go with a good Michelin seasonal. Up here, you see them advertised often. Others order the knockoff rims with tires from Tire Rack for winter.

I stay garaged for the winter and run Toyo Proxi/R1s. Not good in the rain or below 45'.

What is hard to find are Boxster hard tops. They are usually around $1K. From what I understand, they are being bought up by the track guys. 996 hard topd are a dime a dozen, but the window config is diffferent, so they won't fit.

Good luck!

I'd go for 17's if you really want the best performance. They will fit over the brakes of a 986S (I use 17" snows on my 996 in the winter and the 996 has the same brakes).

I'll warn you in advance skinny 17's will look like **** on the car, but you'll out accelerate SUV at snowy stoplights so who cares.

but I think it carries tire/wheel combos for car. 17" wheels. Steel wheels. Narrow. But best thing for snow.

Don't worry about looks no one pays attention to snow tires/wheels unless car stuck in snow and then they wonder why you went for looks vs. snow/ice performance.

Does not hurt to get tire situation figured out early and get tires/wheels bought and shipped to you early. Be sure to test fit front and rear tire/wheels to make sure both clear brake hardware, etc.

Have wheels/tires handy so you can put on at first snow storm or just before storm even. Beat the rush.

Everyone waits until last minute. All it takes is one trip in bad weather with wrong tires to have car off road or worse smashed into tree or other vehicle cause summer tires not grippy enough. And I drove my Boxster on its summer tires once through snow storm. Never ever never again!

Sincerely,

Macster.

I use the factory "Boxster S II" 17"s for snows.

Just make sure you get 225/45/17 at the back (as stated in owner's manual). Well you can't get 255/40/17 in snows anyway.

Thanks everyone. Didn't know it was in the owners manual (haven't picked up the car yet), I'll check it out.

Fitting over the brakes was my consern. I was hoping 16s would fit, but oh well.

Check out the wheel and tire forum for some great deals on winter tires from Tire Rack.

And as Macster said, don't wait until it’s too late. It was difficult for many to find winter tires up here in Toronto in the past winter season as there seemed to be a shortage last year.

As for your wheel question the 17" Boxster twists will work and are commonly available on eBay as well as the 17" Boxster S wheels.

Default Pirelli Snow Sport 18" Tires for Boxster

I found the 18" to be fine on my 2004 S. I am selling them as I no longer own the car.

Set of (4) Pirelli Snow Sport M & S tires. The fronts are 225/40R18 92V N3 and the rears are 265/35R18 92V N3. Porsche approved N3 designation. Fronts have about 70% tread remaining and rears have about 60% tread remaining. The set is over $1,000 new from Tire Rack. Fits Boxster and 993 models. $375 or best offer plus actual UPS shipping
