Default Boxster Engine Question

Does anyone know how to determine what year boxster a motor is for? Is there a location on the block of the motor that would contain this information? Thanks in advance.

example that might tell you year of engine though no date coding/encoding jumps out at me.

I know the castings have someplace a cast in date/time/plant/shift number encoding. These will at least tell you the major castings cast.

Sincerely,

Macster.

I just looked at a set of heads that i have and they say they 2.5l on them.
Yes i stand corrected the 2.5 and the 2.7 have different piston sizes but the same stroke. The 911 got the displacement increase from the change of crank stroke.

The 2.5L and 2.7L have the same block and piston diameter, howver, the 2.7L has the same stroke as the 996 3.4L.

I just looked on the side of the case i have in the garage and it has a 97 stamped on it.
Since it is a 2.5L i am assuming that this is the year that the engine was made or made for.

Did you see this number stamped on the side of the case that has the pulley attached to the case? Mine says 00. Thanks

If he will let me I'll snap a pic and post.

The engine type is stamped on the side of the case by the sump along with the rest of the serial number. It will say M96/##, this in combination with the rest of the engine number will tell you the engine size and model year and whether it is a reman motor.

with number and someone can cross reference engine number and tell you year and other info.

I spotted what proved to be a 2.5l engine out of car today and looked engine over a bit and found casting on end of head with a "2.5L" and some numbers but no date/time code.

Just the serial number and the desire of someone at a Porsche dealer to do the cross referencing for you. Parts counter guy may be best bet if you call asking about parts and want to know MY of engine.

Sincerely,

Macster.

20 is 2.5l engine; 6 is 6 cylinder; 5 is engine version; V is model year; and 00224 is sequential serial number.

Model years: v w x y z

v = 1995
w = 1996
x = 1997
y = 1998
z = 1999
0 = 2000
1 = 2001
2 = 2002

and so on...

Sincerely,

Macster.

That is pic of part number of engine case I think. Serial number should be located on a flat machined surface with numbers stamped in. Not sure where this located though. I've been under my Boxster and have seen it but I do not remember where it is located.

Sincerely,

Macster.
