Question Advice for a Used 1999 Porsche Boxster

I'm looking at a 1999 Porsche Boxster with 145 000 miles. I know it's quite a lot and I'd like to know what is likely to happen in terms of repairs or maintenance and what points should I check when test driving the car.

Thanks

No way to know what the future brings

Are there 200k Boxsters? Yes. Could this one expire in the next 100 miles? Yes.

The only way you can tell what this specific car will surely need is a quality Pre-Purchase Inspection from a Porsche mechanic. Not cheap but worth the $. Once you have his opinion of what needs to be done when to make the car as reliable as you want it to be, you'll know more than most who buy cars. And even then there won't be any assurance that something else won't happen. But at least you'll know what surely needs to be done.

Wonderful cars? Yes.

Expensive to maintain? Yes but less so if you can do the routine stuff yourself and buy parts mail order.

The Pedro you reference from Pedro's garage has well over 145K miles on his car. I think he is pushing 200K now on his 99. He is a good guy and does good work.

Interesting article in the latest Excellence magazine. There are a lot of details that suggest the M96 motors should be 250k + mile motors. But then there are things that go boom a little earlier than that. But if that happens, don't be discouraged. Just be ready. It looks like companies (like the guys above) are figuring out how to make the motors truly bullet proof.

Good luck!

It's hard to believe how much more positive this whole crowd is since that article came out. I had a 97 I sold with 108k miles 2 or 3 years ago. I wish I had kept it, even though the S I have now is great, that 97 was loaded to the gills and I put a bunch of money in mods. But then it was Arctic Silver, the Guards red of the new Porsches, and the S is forest green metallic. I didn't think I would ever own another green car, but it's different and growing on me, especially now that I know all of the possibilities.
