Default S engine for sale----need advice about buying

There is a S engine for sale that has unknown problems (ad states needs rebuild). Asking $1,000. What is a start serial # for the S engine and was there a common problem that they had. I am a 911SC owner and have been interested in the Boxster and my son who has a standard Boxster suggests the S over the 2.7. A spare 911 engine is a good idea. Is a spare S engine a good idea (assuming you have the car).

Sounds fair. Just make sure you get it in writing that it is rebuildable. That should flush out any doubt. Hard to believe they would not have had it done them selves if it was more economical than replacing it.

it's much cheaper to buy a good spare than it is to rebuild an old one. these motors require a lot of special tools and expensive / unavailable parts. in addition, many of the common failure modes render the block unusable. there is no way of knowing this without splitting the case; IMO these people cannot in good faith guarantee this to be a rebuildable motor.

if you want a spare motor, be patient and keep your eyes open. good 3.2L motors routinely become available for under $4k. this is FAR less than the cost of a rebuild. if you're going to buy a spare, why not a 3.4L from a 996? that way you get 300HP.

My mechanic told me that many of the parts for a major engine overhaul were simply not available from Porsche.
He reccomended either finding a "good" used one or a new one.

this is correct. check out flat6innovations; jake raby seems to be about the only guy that's put a lot of thought into these rebuilds. he solves a lot of the factory problems with these motors. it is not cheap.

That is a SCARY statement. Maybe I will stick to the plan to get another 911. I have most of the special tools and parts/machine shop contacts.

Make sure you mean an aircooled 911, because the wasserboxer 911s hve the same issues. The new Carreras, '09s, now have NO Intermediate shaft.

Buying the Porsche AG remnaufactured engine gives you all the updates that older (pre-03) M96 engines need.

There are certain design limitations of all M96 engines that are also present in a replacement "crate" engine from Porsche.

Which is not that we should all panic, most engines have their weak points. And most engines won't fail.

And, while it is true that there are improvements in the "crate" motors, there are some things you can't improve short of redesigning the entire engine. For that see the 2009 Boxster S.

Agreed "most" engines won't fail, when talking of the pre-'03 engines, that ratio may change.

an oiling issue in one of the heads during heavy right hand turns, MMC liners (D-Chunk issue), still has an IMS
