Default What should I pay?

Considering two cars - both one-owner 1999 Boxsters, both in very good condition. Car #1 silver/blk has 58k miles. Car #2 blue/gray has 30k miles.

Get the one with 58k miles.
30k miles is too low for that year. you could still be looking at a slipped sleeve failure on that one.
the one with 58k miles should have failed by now if it was going to.

Good point. Thanks! As a matter of fact, the 30k car had it's engine replaced by Porsche at 9k due to a slipped sleeve failure so that engine only has 21k on it.

If all else is comparable condition wise, I'd go for the one w/ 30k mi as the replacement motors did not have slipped sleeve issues. I also think the myth of problems associated with low millage Boxsters is a bit overblown. I have less than 35k mi on my ’97 and it has none of the problems associated with dried seal, belts & hoses. Having said that it would still be a good idea to check and replace any dried or aged components you find. And of course have a PPI by a mechanic who is experienced with the water cooled generation of Porsches.

Sorry I didn't answer your pricing question. I haven't been in the market for quite a while but I'd think both of the examples you've mentioned should fall into the mid teens. Boxster prices are allover the map these days, and with winter on the horizon and the current state of the economy prices are only going to get better for buyers.

I'd go for #2 at an offer of 15K.

I just drove both of them. They both seem to be in great shape. I'm doing PPIs on them tomorrow.

The PPI on car #1 revealed about 6k in repairs. Car #2 checked out great. I'm negotiating on #2 this afternoon.

What were the recommended repairs out of curiousity?

Both window regulators need replacement, ashtray is broken, both vanity mirrors broken, rt sunvisor torn, left license plate light as well as both front marker lights out, a/c not blowing cold, left cowel cover missing screw, front drains clogged with debris, both cam covers leaking oil, front of engine leaking, 10% left on brakes all around, rear tires worn out and not N rated, both headlights fogged.

Now, I drove this car and it felt just fine to me. I failed to inspect the obvious myself, which I should have done. Perhaps I could have saved the PPI fee but it's money well spent.

I made a deal on the lower mileage car (30k) which checked out just fine. The only items that need attention are replacement of the rear window and the center console cover has a broken hinge.

The car is being smogged (California law) tomorrow morning and I plan to take possession in the afternoon. I agreed on a price of $16,250. I know it's on the high side but I feel it's justified for this car. I originally set out to spend about $14 - $15k.

Sounds like you made the right choice and went about it in a smart manner. Enjoy your new car!!
