Default 2002..2003 Models

Consumer Reports, think what you will about C/U, but their reliability charts are made up from the survey that they send out for comments.
They like the 02 and not so much the 04 but the 03 comes out worst of the three....what's up with that
PLEASE NO FLAMES, I'm looking at the April auto issue and thems' the facts.
Anyone got an 02 in Green/Tan 5 speed for sale?

They did a small write up on Porsches IIRC as I recall a few months ago.
This is a chart that is compiled from a survey that they send to subscribers.
It must be a fair starting point if enough people have had a patticular problem area.
As far as a Green/Tan, all things come to those who wait!
There was one on e-bay a few weeks ago, but there wasn't time to ask for someone to go have a visual. I have done that for a few BMW board people.
I just bought a car for my wife that was on e-bay, something I have NEVER done before. There was a LOT of telephone time involved and I got a good feeling about the car from the trade in dealer (a BMW shop)and from the dealer who sold the car new(a M/B store) and serviced it ( 03 CLK 320 with 11,000 miles) It turned out to be the nicest cleanest car I have seen in a long time....I was keeping my fingers crossed till it arrived by MI (to FL, then again it wasn't a P car.
Seems most Boxsters are Silver, Black or White. ()...my second chice would be a Red/Tan...

Not sure why their data might indicate that. I have an '03 and have had zero problems with it. If you look at the engine failure data, that's dominated by '98s and '99s, with an occasional '00 or '01. I only saw one '03 in the whole list and didn't see any '02s.

I wouldn't put TOO much stock in a CR report based solely on surveys myself, but if your trying to convince yourself to buy an '02....hey what ever floats your boat.

I really wanted meteor gray over black. I knew that was a pipe dream and got the red over black. I don't think I have seen a dark green Boxster, only that aqua/turquoise color.

One thing I will tell you about tan, it doesn't wear as nicely as the darker colors. One of my colleagues has a 1 year old C4S - black over tan. He takes VERY good car of his car. The interior already looks old. My black interior still looks new and it is 6 years old. I really like the tan interiors but decided to focus on the dark colors after comparing the general wear of tan to the darker colors (black, navy etc).

Default IIRC the 03 model year received some kind of mild upgrade...

Anytime a model receives an upgrade it can affect the model year's reliability.

Generally speaking the best car to buy is the last one of the current model run the thinking being all or most of anyhow the bugs have been worked out and so on. OTOH, the worst car to buy is the 1st year of a new model or model upgrade.

(Bought a '96 Mustang with the 4.6l SOHC V8 engine. Even though this engine used in one maybe two other Ford vehicles (pickup truck and T-Bird or Crown Vic?) I had nothing but problems with that engine. New model years were just fine.) There are of course exceptions, but generally speaking...)

Sincerely,

Macster.
