Need Help with Boxster S Engine Replacement
What year engine will fix my 2000 Boxster S 6-speed car w/o modifications?
I recently purchased a 2000 Boxster S 6-speed with a blown 3.2 engine. As a result, I'm currently in the market to purchase a replacement engine and wanted to know what year Boxster S engine (2000 to 200?) I can bolt right into the car without any modifications? Currently, I found a 2002 and a 2003 Boxster S. Will these fit without modifications?
Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Due to the changes in the variocam actuator after 2002, a 2003-on engine will not be able to swap in without some wiring harness modifications. I believe the years are correct, the change in the 996 series came with the intro of the 3.6 in 2002 and I think it was a year later in the boxster, although the boxster didn't get variable valve lift, it did get the new vane type adjuster mechanism as opposed to the chain tensioner mechanism in the earlier cars.

If you are interested, I have an 2002 3.2 that is being rebuilt. the weak intermediate shaft has been replaced with the updated shaft, the rings, rod bearings and main bearings along with the timing chains and oil pump are new. it is being rebuilt by a factory trained porsche tech. if you are interested, let me know. I currently have $5000 into it. And will be willing to sell it for that, provided you have a rebuildable core.

Do you know what the changes were to the intermediate shaft. So much for extensive testing before something is released to us, the guinea pigs. I have 65K on my 01, so maybe I am complete with my field quality control test.

My research into this indicates the improved intermediate shaft was put into...
The shaft is pretty much unchanged except at the end that gets driven by the crankshaft chain. Porsche went to a bigger bearing and changed the style of the crankshaft/intermediate shaft chain drive.
With 65,000 miles on the engine my best guess is your car's engine has the newer intermediate shaft or the shaft it does have is particulaly robust.
Keep the oil fresh and clean (I like 5000 mile oil/filter services) and don't worry about it. (My '02's intermediate shaft is going strong with over 183,000 miles on the engine!)
Sincerely,
Macster.

Thanks guys for all your assistance and as a result I have opted to go with the 2002.
Also, Legend thanks for your offer, however, I have a couple guys that have them in stock for
4K without the core.
