So, right now I'm driving a 944. Sunday I drove an '08 Cayman and I was thoroughly impressed. It made my 944 feel a little crude and boring in comparison. I just wanna know how the early Boxsters are compared to a new 2.7 liter Caymans (or Caymen? dunno...). With prices getting low, I may be compelled to sell my 944 for a Boxster sometime in the future if it's anything like the Cayman... I'm assuming a brand new Cayman is better, but the cars are related so I'm also thinking that they're fairly similar.

Early Boxster is to Cayman as the 944 is to the 968.

In both cases Porsche started with a great car and made it better (and also took a teensy bit of goodness away).

As someone with both an '84 944 and a '98 Boxster, I have to agree with Ray S, both with his 944 to 968 comparason and with his signature line of "Happiness is two porsches"

Going from the 944 to the Boxster was really more of a difference then I thought. I realized I had a lot of little annoyances with my 944 after 10 years and the boxster solved them all.

You will love the boxster. It revs crazy fast compared to the 944, handles better, top comes off, better engine noise, etc.

The worst thing for me was now I have to remind myself to drive the 944 each week.

am early boxster is a lot lighter than a cayman. an early boxster w/ M030 is more fun to drive, IMO. the newer cayman S is hard to beat though.....

98Boxster

After almost 4 years I traded in my beautiful 98 Boxster for an NSX. 2.5 months later I bought the Boxster back - it's that good. Kept the NSX of course too though! My wife and I love the Boxster, it's a terrific car.

I went from a very done up 89 944 Turbo to a Boxster S. I haven't gotten the grin off my face yet. You will not regret the change, the only problem is the sore cheeks from smiling.

ok, so I'm over here too thinking about doing the same thing. Wifey loves the Boxster. Might be nice to pry the Lexus out of her hands once in a while.
Now I have to start searching on the automatics for known issues. Wifey does GREAT with sticks, just not on cars.

Haha I still love my 944, it's just that I'm aware there are better cars out there.

My dad bought a brand new Cayman today and I am jealoouuussssss!!

The cayman interior is not my favorite, too angular and not smooth like that of the older boxsters. I prefer the interior of my 2000 boxster over a cayman. BUT, the cayman had a lot more pep then my 2.7l car.

The Boxster S is a sweet machine, but the older boxster's have quite a few problems, especially oil leaks. Stick with the S and you'll be in good shape.

The only car I regret selling is my NSX. The only thing that keeps me from going back is my 07 Base Boxster. It's that good. Don't miss the Carrera S. Dont miss the 99 Carrera. Don't miss the S2000.

I also have a 335i coupe. It's awesome but the Boxster has ruined it for me. It seems too cushy.

IMHO, The "s" models have no more or fewer problems than the non "s" models of the same years. Do you have any info that would prove otherwise?

my two cents here..

I've owned an 86 994 and still own a 98 boxster, and have driven both a non s and an s cayman. I will always have a soft spot for the 944. for what it was, it was a great car!!!! BUT the boxster is so much better balanced, and has so much more power. the difference between the boxster and the cayman in my humble opinion is in the refinement. the cayman is a much more refined car. without losing the "porsche" feel.

I'm at the point of having to decide to either put some cash into my Boxster (89000 miles and still chugging along) sell it or a newer "s" or hang on another 2 years and go for the cayman. right now, in the winter, the cayman seems the way to go, but I'm sure once the top comes down on the boxster that's gonna change.
