The job is done thanks to a few PCA members and one in particular that let me use his lift. I forgot my camera so I have no photos from the work. Great to be back in the Boxster!

uh oh.....I put those clothes in with the other clothes......the wife is going to kill me. I must get home quickly and destroy the evidence. I cannot blame axle grease on the cat.....again.

The boots themselves are not terribly expensive. If you have a shop do the job, it is the labor. The job takes some time.
I had mine done locally by a shop. I don't remember exactly, but the oem boots were under $100. It took 3 hours, so the lion share of the cost was the labor.

Here is the email I got with the Boots:
the price may have changed by now
The boots are all the same, 37.87 each one, all 4 are
the same. Clamps are 2.46 x 4, and 3.27 x 4, and the grease tube is
24.14 per tube, you'd need at least one per joint to repack them. Parts
are all a week away, I don't have all of this here now. Let me know,
thanks, Jeff.
Due to large email volume, for overnight or expedited orders please call
us to make changes or to place an order so it can be processed quickly.

that's what i was wondering. I saw the boots were about $40-50 each and i didn't see the price on clamps. I had a local indie call me and say they can do the job for $400 plus tax. It made me wonder if he had quoted aftermarket parts instead of porsche parts.
I will need to dig a little more on this. Most likely i will use oem parts.

Well, I am just about to order 2 more boots. The other axle failed ~30k miles after the first one. my outer boot is torn half way. there is no spray of grease and I had it up on a lift last weekend so I am guessing this happened in the last 30 miles or so of driving.
Hello my old friend. Let's see if I recall how to do this again...

The one's on my 02 base are nearly cracked. Going to nurse them as long as I can. Car just turned over 231K miles.
My info is the S is harder on its CV boots than the base. Not sure why but I seem to recall it having something to do about the deflection of the half-shafts. The CV boots are under more stress thus tend to wear out quicker.
Sincerely,
Macster.

I find it interesting that I too found my left-side CV boot split after getting under the car to change the plugs. I think the CV boot is pretty straightforward, but the parts I found were far cheaper than even $40-$50.

For the most past these are very durable automobiles.
Original engine. Original clutch. Original half shafts, CV boots, etc.
I've been very pleased with the car and its performance and reliability over these last 8+ years.
Had I not had such good experience with the Boxster I would not have bought 2 more Porsches: A new 08 Cayman S (lost it to an accident -- not my fault) and a used 2003 Turbo.
Sincerely,
Macster.

On every other car I have experience in, there would be no reason to use Porsche boots or grease (clamps might be specific to the setup, but unlikely).
The whole purpose of a CV boot is to keep a joint packed in grease and out of the elements. It's not a precision piece and the grease itself is a common type. Ok, maybe since the Porsche sees some harder loads I could imagine a special grease needed
Again, based off experiences in other cars, this is usually a 2-3 hour job (depending on the hub setup and whether anything is stuck) and maybe $30-40 in parts.
I'd love to hear if any Boxster owners have used regular non-OEM parts/grease for this....

Just recently used kits from Vertex, each kit incl 1 boot, 2 clamps, grease, cap and cir-clip for $15 each. All 4 were around $70 shipped. Took me about 9 hrs by myself, also needed some tools I didn't have. After doing the entire job once, could probably do it again in 7-8. Not too hard, but time consuming. Yes, I would do it again if I had to. Good luck.
