check engine light
Hi folks,
from my avatar you can see I'm visiting from the 993 board. My coworker has a 2001 986 and his check engine light came on. Car seems to run fine. I told him I'd ask you all what the top three to five things he should look for before finding a garage with an OBD2 scanner.
Any help is appreciated!

In my 1997 Boxster you could reset the CEL light by disconecting the battery for a few minutes. (the stock radio will require a code to function)
If the car runs rough after you reset the CEL, then you have a bad sensor or dirty sensor, and I would first guess MAF, then O2.
you can try to clean the MAF sensor, there is a post on this somewhere if you search.

Also you can try to add engine additives for O2 sensors, sometimes it cleans them enough to stop tripping the CEL.

Loose gas cap or filing the car with gas with the motor running can trip it.
Chech and tighten cap, drive car, it should go off within a 100 miles or so of driving. If he filled it running, the same 100 miles or so should clear the light.
Reading OBD2 codes will only take you so far, Porsche has a gazillion codes that are proprietary and need a Porsche code reader or equivalent.
Mine threw a check enging light about a month ago, loose gas cap was to blame as car showed no codes with a Porsche style reader.

thanks guys!
Loren, my pal did what you said and the read was as follows:
P1128
Manufcturer Contrl
Fuel Air metering
P1130
Manufcturer Contrl
Fuel Air metering
Any thoughts on those? are those necessarily the O2 sensors? How many does a 986 have? Will he get more detailed results with a factory scan tool?
thanks.
