2003 2.7 Boxster - 52K miles.

No issues. Driving along at 5/10's... Slow to turn at 30MPH or so, accelerate up to 60MPH shifting at 5500 each shift... Check engine light starts to blink, push clutch in & check gauges... All dash lights light up and engine dies. Smoke follows car as it rolls to the curb.

Oil below passenger side of engine. Engine cranks but no fire. Engine sounds out of time.

Pull engine & find:

Outboard oil pump froze, breaking the end off by the cam sprocket. Broken chunk drops onto chain & runs up along cam cover breaking it and spilling oil out, can timing of course jumps & valves hit pistons.

Anyone ever see that trick?

take the pump apart and see what locked it up

Heck Brad. You may have worked on this car. It was a lease car from Miami. Pretty clean, no range 2 over-revs or anything. You happen to have replacement 2.7 for it? or 'ya think I should just replace the 1-3 head etc.

 

depends on what you find in the pump.
personaly id say do a 996 engine swap.
changing the head is ballsy as all that metal went through the bearings at some point, and you may find intresting parts in the oil pump.

 

can u return a 986 engine to porsche and get some core-credit when buying a reman. 996 engine?

I dont want this to be another engine swap hybrid with a 996 plant I just want this so my wife can go have coffee in it (which was working out quite well until this happened).

Porsche is telling me about $7600 for a new 2.7 over the counter.

 

Ever seen it on the 3.2? I'm thinking of getting an S and things like this scare the you know what out of me...

New replacement engine is on order.

 

That does suck. I've actually been looking at doing the same thing you did. Get one as a surprise for the wife. You're scaring me though. I've already gone through a motor replacement on my S4(thrust bearing failure). Don't know if I want the worry.

The one positive of the new engine is that you shouldn't have any major problems with it for a long time. Good luck with it.

No big deal in the grand scheme of things. Dont let my experence stop you, Boxsters can be very good cars. I still like this one very much - as does my wife. I will just get it back on the road & forget about it.

 

Check for check your valve springs and lifters. The pumps dont just lock up by themselves.

 

better get a schwin, any motor in any car can fail
