Default oil pressure and engine idle questions

3 weeks ago I bought a 2000 Boxster with 34,900 miles on it. Drives beautifully.

First, it idles around 600 and occassionally hunts 100-200 rpm. Is this too low? If so, where should I start looking? Throttle body maybe?

Second, the oil pressure is all over the place. Usually when I start it up and it does the 5 second count down, the oil pressure gauge is completely lit, indicating high oil pressure. Sometimes only 2 or 3 bars are lit. Does this matter?

any input would be appreciated.

Your idle sounds like it is just a touch low.

The bars you mention do not measure oil pressure, rather oil level. The car must be on a flat and level surface for the electronic dipstick to function correctly. Additionally, if the car has been running recently it may measure a little lower than if it has been sitting overnight.

If you are concerned about oil level you can always pop the trunk and verify the electronic system the old fashion way (dipstick).

If it`s not oil pressure then i`m not particularly concerned. Thanks.

As for the low idle, any ideas for a remedy?

IMHO it is normal for it to vary a little bit (100 rpm or so). If you are concerned check out these threads.

I would change the oil to Mobil1 0W-40. Best to have a known good oil in there. Cheap insurance going forward.

It`s Mobil1 in there currently. I`ve actually already got an oil changed scheduled for tomorrow anyways.
