15K service
My wife just had the 15K service done on her car. I decided to let HBL do it for warranty purposes, plus there were a few issues we wanted checked out. I knew that I could not get 0W50 Mobil One.
I am surprised by the bill and would like feedback --
* HBL used 15W50 @ $7.88/quart -- I have not seen it priced that high at even a gas station.
* one wiper blade $27.26 (odd, only one)
* oil filter insert $15.50
* air cleaner cart $30.39
* pollen filter $31.65
* throw away 10 quarts of oil $46.75 ??
* 4 hours labor - $359.60 (expected hourly rate, but incredible amount of time)
It looks like I will be doing the service work in the future, unless there are warranty implications. I do most of the repetitve work on the 911, it seems like this should be ano-brainer.

I can tell you by looking at those prices that they are charging well over list price. The o/f cartridge list for less then $10. I can understand some dealers charging over list (as it is only suggested) but that far over is a little hard to swallow.

So what are the "list" prices on each of those items? My 15K service is coming up shortly and I know that being a PCA member I am supposed to get a 10% off list discount on any parts on my local dealer. I want to make sure they are starting from "list" price and not over list before I get the discount.

oh and a little note.....I have seen a bulletin from porsche saying that 15w-50 is only to be used for the 996 twin turbo and they say 0w-40 synthetic for everything else. I know that from mobil one you can only get 0-40 in a drum and not quarts(the last I checked.)

VW -- thanks for posting the numbers, I am not sure why they used 15W50, the main reason that I did not change the oil myself -- can't get 0W40. I have gotten large supplies of Mobil One 15W50 for closer to $4.00 quart.
You really think that HBL uses the oil in a shop heater? If they charged a recycling fee and actually used the product for further revenue enhancement, it seems like it would be consumer fraud. They should have paid me for the using the oil.

Not saying that HBL used it...but really is a good idea....better for the environment. Getting 100% use of the oil....but I cant beleive they would charge people that much money for 10 or so qts of oil. I would think that if they are being charged 4.68 per quart to have it disposed of by a company that they would spend the $5000 and get a waste heater. Even if they put it outside and blew warm air into the air...would be alot cheaper in the long run then paying the 4.68. I was just quoting a dealer that I know is trustworthy and honest. And at $4.99 a qt sounded good for oil....even I understand that the dealer has to make money.

O-40 is available by the quart. I get mine from an oil supply house here in Calif, however, at my next oil change 30k, I will feel comfortable that all is loose enough to put in the heavier 15-50. My car is in a garage and the temps are very moderate so not to worry about cold starts. You poor bxxxxxxx in cold country my apoligies.

I think my 2000 S came with 15W-50? At least that's what the dealer recommended. What's the downside to using 15W-50?
Prices on the 15k service are widely inconsistent. I've seen it run between $250 and $750. (!)
I did my own 15k servicing. Oil changes are simple enough (I like doing them too). I installed a BMC air filter to replace the factory paper filter.
I will probably go to a dealer for the 30k servicing because it is more involved, but will continue to do oil changes on my own.
