Boxster S over 996 cabrio?
Is there anyone here that chose a Boxster (particularly the "S") over a 996 cabrio?? One gets the impression that the only reason some people would pick a Boxster S over a 996 cabrio is if they couldn't afford the 996 - but I can't believe it's that simple. Does the Boxster S handle better, or is it more fun than the 996 cabrio?
If it's lack of power, surely there are plenty of performance mods available to tweak the Boxster?

I had I 2000 C2 Cab, which I traded for a 2001 996tt, just picked up an 02 BoxterS two weeks ago. My thoughts:
Not that much of a difference in pickup.
BoxterS smaller lighter, easier to toss around.
Feels tighter than my C2
Overall I think the BoxterS is a better buy unless you need a back seat.

Have a daughter so 2 seaters are out of the question for me. I know I could use another car to drive but will get withdrawal from not driving my Porsche : ). I like the look of the boxster and I would say for the price it's one of the best 2 seaters out there if not the best. Can't go wrong either way. Regards. Mike

I think the Carrera coupes are beautiful but I have never found the cabrios to be aesthetically pleasing except when the hard top is on. Even then, I think the coupes are prettier.
However, the Boxster is one of the few cabrios that looks great with the top up or down. ..IMHO

I have driven both ,but couldn"t get past the enjoyment that the boxster brings , before the boxster i had a twin turbo GTR sykline 4.3 sec to 60mph & 13sec qtr,s it was fast but no where as chuckable as the boxster before that i had a tiptronic boxster in 98 which i loved and hated i loved the drive but hated the go ,iloved the fact that i could pull in much more powerful cars if the the road got interesting but to be blown off at the first piece of straight ,or the fact that it was a porche and tha most cars cuold waste it was annoying . then I drove a boxster s an thought how good is this , and then latter still drove a 3.4ltr 6spd and was rehooked sold the gtr and started the conversion myself as i was to impatient to wait 4 assistance it know is almost as quick as the GTR but between 2 points the GTR would need a street directory to figure out where the boxster was going hope this helps in the making of decission

I got it over the 911 cab because i think it looks better. i like the fact that the boxter/s is a true convertible, built as a convertible, and a true roadster. the 911 looks better as a coupe. even with the hard top the lines on a cab just aren't as smooth as the coupe. i had it down to a 911 coupe and a boxterS. since i live in northern california i got the boxterS. Price was a very small factor in the decision.

I actually went with the 996 cab, because those "fake" backseats make a difference. Coming out of a TT roadster, having only 2 seats was limiting. Now at least I can carry my golf clubs in the back seat.

Heh, it's the other way around, why would you spend $15-40k more on a 996 cabrio unless you need those cheesey back seats? Tiny bit of straight line advantage that's it.
An instructor from my pca region told me the boxster s is a more fun and better handling car than his 996 coupe (lighter than a cab and probably slightly more rigid) - I wasn't even asking him about the subject, he volunteered it.
If you need to show everyone that you have an extra 30k to blow on back seats that are useless get a 996 cab, otherwise get a boxster s. Of course if it were me, and I had the money I would get just make the jump to a 996 turbo or a used 996 or 993 turbo (993 turbo should be able to be had for ~ cost of a cab I would think).

Agreed there too, but this is subjective. I think it makes a ridiculous looking convertible but I love the looks of the coupe.
